This is what you do when you have money to spend. The Sox have a lot of it.

It's a good move for the Sox. They needed bullpen help and got it. Pitching is really expensive. You also have a guy who could spot start if needed. The contract looks reasonable to me.

You get a lefty reliever? Sox are so fucked.

If you need one you pay a premium for it.

If this is the biggest move they make then you are right.

We lost like 8 games last year because our lefty reliever went from Scott Downs to Erik Surkamp. Both were awful.

Gotta pay when it gets that bad.

Spending does not equal winning in baseball.

The greatest White Sox off season of all time was a series of small signings and trades

oof...that has the makings of a contract they will want to move by the end of 2016

His fastball velocity increased by a little over 1.5 mph last season. That's a significant increase for a 30 yr old pitcher. Hopefully he's able to hold that velo bump or he might not make it to the end of 2016.

Should we let Big Fan inform Zach Duke that the Sox are moving to North Dakota?

Yeah, but you pretty much knocked that down as simply a series of gambles that all unexpectedly paid off, so you can't really cite that now.

Milwaukee to Bismarck. Duke is going to fire his agent tomorrow.

edit; RPB, I assume you are talking about 2004 into 2005 (note; 2005). I don't know if I would consider signing Jermaine Dye, AJ Pierzynski, and trading Carlos Lee "small" moves.

Just think how much 5 million a year is worth in Bismarck though.

I am interested to see how Rick Hahn goes about this off season. He did a great job last year, which didn't yield results because of all the legacy crap like Dunn. He made many solid moves.

A lot less than it was a year ago, Hawg. Huge, gigantic population explosion up there!

He had a very good off season but for some reason he thought his job was done on Opening Day. He did nothing in season to improve a horrible back of the rotation and putrid bullpen besides rape the waiver wire for other teams cast offs. Hahn has to show he can build a bullpen and that he has the balls to make in season moves to improve the team.

They're not going to Bismarck. It's gonna be Minot... the Minot B-52's. MLB chasing the bored Air Force demographic.

Unless you wanted to trade talent, there was not much he could do. There were too many injuries and/or poor performances. It was a dead year no matter what with Flowers, Dunn. Tank, Konerko, etc taking up roster space.

Yes, they were good gambles. That off season was great for them, but you'd prefer more money spent like signing Adam Dunn i guess?

Dye was coming off injuries, it wasnt a big deal at the time.

The Lee trade was a big move. A.J. was not.

What exactly is your point?

The Sox payroll is WAY too low. They need to spend more money if they want to compete. Of course we can cross our fingers that they end up good while also not paying well but that is unlikely to happen. I want them to do both.

At some point Bryan has to realize he doesn't have the baseball chops to keep up with BRick in these debates.

My point, quite simply, is that you are acting like spending for spending's sake is a good idea.

Its not. Its a bad idea

Where they rank in payroll does not matter in the least. Spend smart money.

Yes, the ONLY valid stance is to say you want your team to be smart in free agency. You seemingly want them to spend on "whatever is available"

Why not just offer Duke $20 million a year? That'll solve your spending issue quicker.

Because they offered him 3 for 15 and he took it, you would be a bad negotiator Kirkwood.

Rick barely follows baseball (his own words) and it shows in these types of discussions.

The inverse happens when we discuss NCAA football or basketball

My point is painfully obvious. You can't expect to win if you have a low payroll. Now, you may end up doing it but it makes things much harder.
rogers park bryan wrote:

It most certainly matters. You have a better chance of winning with a high payroll.

BRick doesn't care if it's a bad or good deal. He just cares the Sox are spending.

That is a poor attempt to change what my actual point is.
