Ahead of Charles Wang of the Isles and the Wilpons of the Mets, but trailing Snyder, Loria, Jerry Jones, and the usual suspects.

Quote:
The Ricketts have rehabilitated themselves in the last few years by making smart moves, like hiring Theo Epstein as president of baseball ops and Joe Maddon as manager. But these are all moves they want to get almost anyone but them to pay for: They demanded $150 million in public subsidies in addition to a cut of amusement-tax revenue in perpetuity. They went to war against rooftop owners across from Wrigley for the ability to put up billboards to "fund renovations" that they could easily fund out-of-pocket instead, then floated a minority share ownership scheme because, hey, other suckers!

During the 2012 election, they funded a colossally stupid Jeremiah Wright attack ad complete with a casting call for a "Metrosexual Black Abe Lincoln." The ad was never completed. Maybe they'd have more spending cash if they didn't also fund Dinesh "Thank God I'm Not in Gen-Pop!" D'Souza's shithead book and even more incompetent documentary. Lastly, despite telegenic public tiffs with Hizzoner Rahm Emanuel that pit entrepreneurs against the predation of BIG GUBMINT, the family that made its money off securities and online brokerage are otherwise behind-the-scenes chummy with that union-busting creep who just got dinged for accepting illegal donations from pension managers.

Don't forget the Obamacare thing. Nice sideswipe on Rahmney, too.

This list sucks. The list 1-32 should be NFL owners and then from there we can talk about other sports.

Other than hiring Epstein, I dont think he's done anything to benefit the team

I dont like him in general. I think his letters and addresses to the fans are insulting at best and creepy at worst.

I didnt think he would spend at all when he bought the team (because I was led to believe he was spending way too much of his net worth on the team. That might not be true, but that is what i read at the time) and so far he hasnt. And im not even looking for crazy spending (though id take top 5 over bottom 5). Just add on when something is there.

Some of the blame might go on Epstein with that part of it, but it all comes down to Ricketts

Crazy thought

What if Ricketts was frustrated by the Cubs letting him down so many times, so he said FUCK IT, Im gonna buy them, ruin them, make a ton of money in the process and it'll be my big middle finger back at the organization

That would be fucking crazy

Interesting. So mostly that he isn't spending?

Only insomuch as it shows that he doesnt really care. I dont want him to spend like crazy or anything but there are a couple guys they should have had, imo. (Some blame on Theo there too.)

I dont think he really wants to win that badly.

Like Jerry. You can call him cheap (and be right in some cases) or whatever but there was no question he always wanted to win a world series.

He's only interested in maximizing profits while minimizing spending. Many conservative businessmen and women do this. When an event occurs, good or bad, the first move is to start cutting spending. Spend as little as possible, make as much as you can.

Everything looks great from your business standpoint, but you risk so much by being a penny pinching douche. Like the 'tarp gate' issue earlier this year. Ricketts cut the ground crew's time, wages, and benefits to not spend and keep that money.

He's trying to turn what should be one afternoon of fun with yoru buddies or fam at the ball game into a weekend affair where you spend more. The hotel, Sheffield being turned into a cubs bazaar, and other moves are made to increase revenues.

I don't think he's an idiot. He's a weasel. Its the fastest way to have your people turn on you and unionize. There's no personal/human touch with his approach. Its all about the numbers and the profits.

I'm fine with them being ranked 13th worst.

I was just glad he found room for a sentence in there that was a sports-related reason.

Cant blame Ricketts. When the majority of your fanbase tells you they are fine with tiny payrolls and losing on purpose, why change anything?

Guy buys business and in the process takes on initial debts of $580 million ... guy spends first 4.5 years doing what he can by cutting spending and finding/acquiring new revenue streams ... guy is obvious cheapskate now and into the future forever ... got it.

Basically.

Once we see the Cubs with a really high payroll, we can then reassess just how cheap he is.

*sigh* Fact- Cubs fans troll the Sox section just as much, no matter what IMU wants to believe.

I recanted immediately ... it sounded a lot more mean that I meant it particularly buried in the other points.

Cubs/Sox trolling of any stripe is stupid period.

He is supposed to want to win regardless of fans pressure

If he doesnt and its just a business to him, fuck him anyway

Its like someone showing up at a house I am building at the 6 month point and telling me it looks like shit. You dont have a door, no cabinets and these plywood floors look like shit.

Did Rolling Stone show up and see no bleachers and decide, This place is terrible.

next we will have the 10 best rock bands of all time as decided by Sports Illustrated.

Um, Jeb Lund writes about sports a lot. He also writes about politics, Florida, and joke contests on twitter!

It's only "just business" when he's stabbing the great and loyal Ricky "Raw Deal" Renteria in the back.

So does Bob Nightengale and I could not think of a less informed guy than him.

No. It's like someone showing up at the house you are building at the three year point and telling you it looks like shit.

It's really pretty simple

If he's just doing it for the monetary gain- Fuck him. If he's doing it to try and win- That's cool

They showed up back in May and decided the park was awful.

If he would sign some 35 year old free agents on the downside of their careers, then I would believe they want to win.

This list is mostly horrible people that also happen to own sports teams.

If we're talking about dysfunctional, incompetent or negligent owners in running their sports franchise then the list would mostly consist of NHL and NFL owners and maybe the Knicks owner.

What about the 'owner' of the MWSFMB?

I mean, what's so noble about Jerry's accumulation of wealth? His career is built off either cheating the government and extracting transfer payments.
