OPS+. I think Baez's power can beat out Castro's more complete approach.

Well OPS and OPS+ would be the same thing here as they play for the same team. If I understand it correctly.

If Baez can bat .240 he can easily beat Castro's 2014 OPS I'd think. Will he bat .240? Tough.

But Castro should continue developing a bit more doubles and HR pop...and could maybe get an OPS over .800. He had one over .800 for decent chunks of the season.

This one is tough. I like it.

Buy me dinner, soldier?

You're right. I referred to the wrong statistic. I meant wOBA:

Quote:
Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA) is one of the most important and popular catch-all offensive statistics. It was created by Tom Tango (and notably used in “The Book”) to measure a hitter’s overall offensive value, based on the relative values of each distinct offensive event.

wOBA is based on a simple concept: Not all hits are created equal. Batting average assumes that they are. On-base percentage does too, but does one better by including other ways of reaching base such as walking or being hit by a pitch. Slugging percentage weights hits, but not accurately (Is a double worth twice as much as a single? In short, no) and again ignores other ways of reaching base. On-base plus slugging (OPS) does attempt to combine the different aspects of hitting into one metric, but it assumes that one percentage point of SLG is the same as that of OBP. In reality, a handy estimate is that OBP is around twice as valuable than SLG (the exact ratio is x1.8). In short, OPS is asking the right question, but we can arrive at a more accurate number quite easily.

Weighted On-Base Average combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.

If you're OK with using OPS I'll accept that bet. I don't think wOBA will be kind to Baez. :|

The Chicago White Sox signed left-handed pitcher, Joseph Savery, to a minor league contract on Saturday. Savery, who turned 29 in November, pitched 44.1 innings for Triple-A Sacramento in 2014, posting a 2.84 ERA with 45 strikeouts.

and today:

The White Sox have designated righty Scott Carroll for assignment to create roster space for the official signing of first baseman Adam LaRoche, the club announced .

Carroll, 30, filled a swingman role last year for Chicago in his first attempt at the big leagues, making 19 starts and seven relief appearances. Over 129 1/3 total frames, Carroll threw to a 4.80 ERA with 4.5 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 to go with a 53.4% groundball rate. ERA estimators thought that Carroll was slightly unlucky, as he registered a 4.77 FIP, 4.58 xFIP, and 4.54 SIERA.

This Buster person is obviously wrong because Bigfan's "source" said Kenny was causing trouble for Hahn and Uncle Jerry. No way they would ever "balk" at letting him talk to another team about their President of Baseball Operations job.

It's already over KW said "that ship has sailed." I'm guessing the Chairman has a promotion in store for him.

Sox also going hard after Robertson, the former NYY closer.

The White Sox are setting their sights on David Robertson, writes George King. http://nypost.com/2014/12/08/white-sox- ... robertson/

He'd be a 1 year rental. Cubs offered 85/5 and were turned down. His demands break Jerry's 3 years for a pitcher rule.

That only changes what they should be willing to pay unless an extension is part of this.

I totally understand why they would want him. He's probably a #2 caliber starter, and would be entering his free agent season wanting to show he can be a #1. It depends on what the White Sox have to give for 1 season since Oakland supposedly won't allow him to talk about an extension with any teams, and he would probably want more than the White Sox are willing to give.

If it's Tim Anderson, I don't see how that makes sense for the White Sox. If it's 2 middle of the road prospects, fine, although I would think Oakland would try for more elsewhere.

MLBTR suggested the price as Trey Michalczewski, Micah Johnson and Nolan Sanburn. I would do that in a heartbeat, and I really like Trey Mich.

There is no such rule. Quintana and Sale got 5+ years.

I believe their situations were different. Hahn defined their arbitration year salaries and locked up free agent year or two at slave wage prices.

Bruce Levine stated this weekend that Samardzija is one of the few players with whom he has a deeply personal relationship. He said Samardzija has made it clear that he wants to play his baseball in Chicago.

Good luck on seeing which of these teams is going to break the bank

Sources: If the White Sox do deal for Jeff Samardzija, return would be Marcus Semien and prospects. A's would slot Semien in at shortstop.
