I hate Kaplan. "North of $135M"

$135.1M? $350M?

Hanley's bat would have helped. .283 with 13 home runs and 71 RBIs.-figure out where to stick that!

I know where you can stick it. Seriously, Castro puts up those numbers and he is alot younger.

I guess we'll see how it works out for Boston.

They missed on Middlebrooks, so that's why they are going to free agency

I hope Bryant works out

Missed on Middlebrooks, and at least hedging their bet on Xander

Report: Cubs make substantial offer to Lester
The Cubs have reportedly extended a six-year offer to Jon Lester that is worth an amount “north of” $135 million, according to CSNChicago.com’s David Kaplan.

The Cubs’ reported offer exceeds the current six-year offer from the Red Sox that is believed to be in the $110-120 million range. It was reported earlier in the day that Lester could ultimately strike a deal with an average annual value exceeding $25 million. This latest news suggests that’s certainly a possibility as the market for Lester begins to really heat up.

Lester is expected to meet with the Cardinals and Giants at some point next week, while the Braves also remain interested in the left-hander. All three teams, in addition to the Cubs and Red Sox, could use another top-end starter. The Cardinals could use Lester to off-set the loss of Shelby Miller, while the Giants’ rotation remains extremely unclear behind ace Madison Bumgarner and the Braves continue to try and bolster their rotation.

The Cubs certainly remain a front-runner in the Lester sweepstakes and extending an offer such as this one could put some pressure on the other teams in pursuit.

Still guessing it gets up to 150m. The fact the Cubs significantly topped the Boston offer leads me to believe they know Boston is the favorite and that it's going to take a lot to get him to not sign there.

GDub vs Kap - lol!

Gordon Wittenmyer ‏@GDubCub 44s45 seconds ago

Source: Report that Cubs offered Lester a six-year deal of more than $135m is "not accurate."

David Kaplan ‏@thekapman 7m7 minutes ago

Latest on Lester: Solid east coast non-team source told me Cubs being very aggressive (135+). Team has been in radio silence... Won't talk.

sounds like you're bitter.... maybe you lost out on "father of the year" to him? his wife likes to fuck him very much, btw. thanks for reading!

the cub thing to do here is let it "leak" out that you were one of the finalists to get lester but not actually get him, so the rubes/fans believe that you TRIED to spend that big money "when it's time" </pedantic> but those damn east coast teams with giant pockets outspent our generous offer! dadgummit!

bonus points when you buy into their lester desire wearing one of these shirts

Also, they are making deals that make sense. Not just spending to spend.

Already making excuses as to why Boston will be a much better team next year because they spent a lot of money?

How long did we have to hear about that Soriano money? Pay this guy more than $22 million a
year and let's see what happens here.

yeah and in term of making sense..... so they gave up on xander bogaerts then? i thought he was a no-doubt/can't-miss prospect who came up a shortstop, but was shifted to third as they tried to focus on stephen drew eventually after [i forget what they tried to start the season in 2014].... so now they go and sign a couple'a big $$$ players who happen to be SS/3B.

and isn't sandoval overpaid? we're talking about a guy who's average season is .292/17/73, and if you take only the last 3 years into consideration we're talking .280/14/72.... and that's worth just a tick under 20mil/yr for the next 5 years?

but hey if edwin jackson is making 13mil/yr i suppose anything's possible.

hanley's a better signing but i dont think everyone's completely thrilled with that one because you're paying big bucks to a guy who was an offensive demi-god in his early/mid 20s but has decined somewhat, had that half season of OMFG WHOA 1.035OPS!!!!!! in 2013 (but note the half season part) and then missed significant time last year too to be somewhere between his career year #s in 2013 and his decline #s in 2011-12. dont forget that hanley fell off hard and there's a reason it was seen as !!!!!WTF DODGERS?!?!!?! when they took on that monumental salary.

sandoval? idk man. that's some big $$$ to spend considering you just effectively shitcanned your can't miss prospect SS/3B. maybe he can play 2B? at least he's not jackie bradley jr, eh? oh wait, i forgot that boston has their veritable mascot at 2B.

these signings might lend credence to the rumors that theo didn't want to sign crawford/adrian-gonz but his hand was forced and that's part of the reason he left, even tho blame for those big $$$$ spectacular failures tend to be given to theo.

So this makes more sense than giving Samardzija his money? no opinion,I'm asking for other fan's opinions on this one.

No, but I know you. Sandoval could be terrible and if Boston improves at all you'll credit him to say you were right.

You either still dont get what Im saying or are purposely ignoring it.

Your plan to spend on "something" is a bad one and it always will be.

Of course, but it would require more than a minor improvement. The Red Sox are a perfect example of what I was talking about. I'm sure if they are still bad you'll be claiming you were right.

Once again, that isn't what I said, and I have even clarified otherwise but you refuse to accept it.

Let me put it another way, if the White Sox had made the exact same moves as the Red Sox have this year, I'd be very happy.

It's a sad state of baseball but right now where does the Cub's Valbuena rank as far as starting 3rd sackers? I'm happy with Luis at his salary for the Cubs. "Pudgy" looks like a bad deal for Boston.

I think there are maybe 10 pitchers worth $20 million a year. That is still a lot of money. I would rather get two guys
than pay one guy $25 million a year.
