Sears is in a weird market. It doesn't reach the economies of scale of big box stores, and it also doesn't "specialize" in anything memorable. It is destined for a life of mediocrity and, ultimately, failure.

Sears has Craftsman tools, and Die Hard batteries. Those are both top notch products.

True, but they also dabble in too many other things. They probably have a good margin on those products, but I would imagine they are the cash cows. This is of course not supported by any data, and it's probably totally wrong.

The KMart on Roosevelt Rd in Forest Park is closing. I'm honestly shocked it lasted this long. I went in there last year looking for something because the Walmart next door didn't have it, and I think there were 10 people in the store: Me and 9 employees.

Sears should have stuck with the Sears Hardware stores.

I think the emergence of Home Cheap-o, Menard's, and Lowe's may have had something to do with that.

Yeah but I really liked them. More stuff than True Value or Ace and not as huge as HD etc.

Craftsman used to be made in the U.S with high quality but Sears management outsourced manufacturing to China not too long ago.

Bad move. That was a brand with cache and history, deciding to toss that in the garbage was not all that smart.

American labor is pretty expensive. Most guys using tools for DIY projects and in garages at home don't seem to
care as much as your professional technician might. There are American made products out there if it means
a lot to you, just costs more.

They make a lot of tools in this area. Machining is big. Must be traditional form the old steel days. It isn't all gone yet. Vise grips are here and/or robo grips.

I have three pairs of Craftsman Vise Grips. They come in very handy, when hanging duct work on commercial jobs.

At my work we use "globally sourced parts" to make genuine Made in the USA shit also.

Most of our bulbs and ballasts "Contains USA made products." Some of our items are made in the USA though.

Which is actually 100% true. The labor costs are so cheap in China, they can import all American made raw materials (copper wire, glass, aluminum, etc), assemble the items, then export the finished products back to the US.

Another bad choice.

Craftsman was a Sears exclusive, made in the USA, the brand had trust. The bright idea was to destroy the brand and then allow people to buy it at places other than Sears.

Slow clap.

It does seem foolish to mess around with a winning formula. Coca-Cola learned this, and went back to the old model.

If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

That's the problem, Sears is irreparably broke. When no one goes to your stores, then you have to sell your brands in other people's stores.

Another dying brand.

Who will be out of business first, Ace Hardware, or True Value?
