Ace used to be awesome. Each shop had themselves an old ass man plumber, electrician, painter... and they'd tell you how to do whatever you needed to do. Home Depot and Menards just hires kids who tell you maybe which aisle to find things in (if you're lucky enough for them to know what you're talking about). Good luck getting one to know the difference between a quarter turn angle stop and a saddle valve.

Long gone are the days of being able to bring in something that broke under your sink and say, "I need one of these". When I worked at Ace, I had me a little shop in the back, and would cut and glue PVC for folks that did shit like that.

Ace you could bring in your screens and have them replaced, or a broken window or glass and they'd cut the glass for you. I needed to thread some 1/2 inch black pipe once and thought it'd be quicker to stop in at Menards than to run all the way out to my shop to do it myself, and jesus it took an hour because the only guy who could run the machine was at lunch and they wouldn't let me do it myself because of "insurance".
