Bernstein has continually question Rose's intellegience likening him to an untamed beast that needs to be corralled. He should just call him a dumb genius and get it over with.

As bad as his constant questioning of Rose's mental capabilities is, his wonderment when a black man can actually do mundane everyday tasks like opening mail and drinking coffee is much worse. Anything more complicated that that though, the brother should get guidance from a Really Smart Guy before taking action.

In a vacuum, i think the commentator makes a lot of strong points. As someone who has closely covered Rose's career as part of the Chicago media, it's easier to see where Dan is going to assume that Rose can't or won't further articulate why he is wearing that shirt.

You mean in his suggestion that Rose is dumb? Yeah, he probably isn't wrong about that. But you could say the same thing about most professional athletes. The Chris Youngs and Ron Darlings are the exceptions. And his attacks on Rose go far beyond just calling a dumb athlete dumb. They're almost personal in nature.

And there's something especially distasteful about his comments being that they're coming from a privileged son of the North Shore. If Nas, for example, were to make similar comments about Rose, I might not even notice. And not simply because Nas is black (although being black isn't merely coincidental to the dynamics), but because he came from the same school, if not the same neighborhood, and some of his life experiences are necessarily going to be similar to Rose's because of that fact.

You don't need to be a genius to understand the concept of police violence and its disproportionate use against black men. Like you say, Rose grew up in Englewood. I'm sure he's aware of the problem of police brutality.

Bernstein is simply using the question of Rose's intelligence to invalidate his politics.
