TUESDAY, 3:37am: The Cubs, Giants, Dodgers and Red Sox have all made offers to Lester of around six years and $150MM, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes. One unknown team is willing to go to seven years and around $175MM, but Rosenthal suggests (as Jon Heyman also did earlier this morning) that might not matter, because Lester might simply choose the team he prefers, regardless of the financial specifics.

No to $175/7. With 6 years you're hoping the last 3 years aren't terrible.

IF the Cubs get him, great. They can get a lot more parts to the puzzle if they don't,too.

That's right, jimmy. They need to save some money for Keppinger.

Heyman also says he won't neccesarily take the biggest offer. Could mean that, or just could be referring to the fact that the taxes are way higher in CA:

Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS · 5h 5 hours ago
lester said to have 6- and 7-year offers. most expect deal to wind up in $150-175M range. #giants #cubs #redsox #dodgers

Hahn went and got his guy. It'll be interesting to see if Theo is able to as well.

What a ridiculous statement, and I hate that I'm even responding. Lester is a free agent. Theo can't MAKE him sign. He might not want to play in Chicago.

By this logic, no GM can be judged on anything ever outside of draft picks.

That is the only way that a GM can decide something and no one can stop it. Either another GM or a player can shut down anything else.

Is the Montero deal pretty much done? Or is it dependent on getting Lester? I like the concept of buying low on the guy.

It really sounded like it was pretty much done last night, but nothing official. To be fair, there wasn't anything official on Hammel either due to a physical being needed.

I didn't see anyone suggest MM was dependent on Lester. I would assume that if Lester/Ross are in fact a package deal, that would just mean Castillo is in the MM deal or will be traded later.

good baseball careers begin and end in that time span but that is the price of poker

I wrote it before, if six is acceptable seven really isn't all that different. I think not getting Lester puts them in a bad position as I think the market will be wilder for Scherzer and Shields' money will be less deserved than the other two.

You act as if they signed a good player coming off a bad year to a show me deal, which made your statement inaccurate. I was hoping to salvage at least a portion of your ability to be correct with my clarification.

Are you a masochist? There is ample evidence to say you are flat out wrong rather than only half wrong. I gave you the out.

I think the Cubs should do almost whatever they can to get Lester, but this isn't really sound thinking. They are probably ok with five and because of that willing to go 6. If you extend that to seven you are not far away from saying "If you're willing to do 6/150 just do 10/250 if that's what it takes to get it done."

Giants assistant GM Bobby Evans says that he has been led to believe that lefty Jon Lester is leaning toward signing with another club, Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM reports (links to Twitter). Lester has told the Giants that he is not going to simply take the highest bid, and Evans left Bowden with the impression that San Francisco believes the starter is drawn to joining the Cubs or Red Sox.

FWIW, yesterday my "guy" said the Red Sox had absolutely no chance to sign him going in to the meeting last night. And it had nothing to do with money. So my hopes are officially up (and ready to be crushed).

Rumor from the trading floor has the Cubs trading for Cespedes at some point

I totally expect Lester to be signed right around the start time for the Sons of Anarchy finale just to fuck with my day.

Or sometime next week.
