I don't think Jerry's denial of permission had anything to do with Williams, but rather was about his relationship with Beeston.

Got some good business done last night, by the way.

Over $11 million for a 30 year-old closer sporting a 3.08 ERA? I don't see how that can go wrong at all.

Robertson will be fine. He can strike guys out. And how old do you want your closer to be? The Sox will have the guy for his prime seasons.

I rather they spend the $11M on a position player or 4/5 pitcher. The Sox have shown a competency to take unheralded minor leagues and turn them into serviceable closers.

I agree and disagree. I hate tying up a lot of money in a closer. And it seems like sometimes you can just find a guy to do it. Except when you can't. That Sox team last year probably would have been very close to .500 with just a competent guy finishing games. If they're really planning to contend, they had to address the issue. It's like making a bet. Sure, you're hoping with Robertson, but it's a more logical hope than just throwing a guy in there. That's what the $11 million gets you.

All of a sudden the bullpen looks a lot better. They're probably going to have Rodon back there too. If things go right he'll likely be handling the eighth inning by the second half of the season.

Samardzija deal is pretty good. Sox probably have a very good chance to re-sign him at the end of the year when he regresses back to his career walk rate after magically cutting it in half last year. He won't be able to play hardball dick with his 4.00 ERA.

In that case, why would you want to sign him? In this era of high priced front line pitching, getting him for a year at $10 million is a good deal. Each season counts.

I'm not a fan of Samardzija, but he obviously has the stuff to put together a big season. Maybe you get it next year. If he gives you his career year at say 17-8 and you win the division, I'm not worried about what comes next. And I don't see anything in Semien at all. Another athletic Kenny guy who can't get on base.

Semien and Bassitt and another prospect, according to tweets out of Oakland

I think it's a great deal. His regressed numbers will still be a solid investment at $10.5M. Add pitching in the AL in hitter's park and maybe he'll stop thinking he's such hot shit and get into the Sox price range long-term. Good gamble for Hahn.

The Robertson is bad. I do not like it at all.

I understand those who would rather not pay big money to a closer, but I like both of these moves.

Nice to see the White Sox finally putting in some serious effort to winning.

It's also very likely that Shark is here past next year. He grew up a White Sox fan and fits in perfectly as a second or third starter in Chicago.

Holy crap! My joy over getting Samardzija will out weigh the horror of this Robertson deal. Hopefully that deal won't prevent them from getting him signed to an extension.

The front end of the Sox rotation could beat any team. Adding Duke and Robertson has the bullpen looking good. Throw in a guy like Rodon and maybe another free agent and this bullpen could be better than the Royals.

Good moves, especially if they re-sign Samardzija

Robin will be promoted about five games in.

Well, that's John Danks' nickname.

Like I said, Samardzija clearly has enough ability to put together a good season. At $10 million for the season, he's a bargain.

And flip him at the deadline for prospects?

Unique strategy. I hope it pans out.

That's a nice back door to have. But the season will have been a failure if they're trading him at the deadline. That's the difference between this plan and The Plan.

Exactly.

Who is going to manage this crew?

Great signings and trades but we still haven't addressed the biggest need here.
