It's pretty clear where Shark's standing in baseball is when teams desperate for pitching in the Red Sox and Rangers with ample prospects weren't interested at all.

Yet, Theo offered him a long term deal.

No, it really was not. Semien was a butcher in the field. He always came up big in late inning situations but he just hasn't looked like an MLB hitter to me. Anyway, if the lose Shark, they will end up getting a prospect of similar quality.

I think it was you who was doing backflips about Hammel at $10 million per. Here is a guy the Sox are getting for the same money who is a true upper middle of the rotation spot holder and all they had to give up was some magic beans.

I was not doing backflips about Hammel. I think I said I liked the deal.

But I would rather have Shark.

I just dont think there is any way you can say this is a good deal if you are not able to sign him long term. Are the Sox going to be able to pay Shark the money he wants? He clearly wants top of the rotation money

I'm sure Jeff Cutler errrrrrr Jay Samardzija will finally have the success here that's eluded him everywhere else. My god have you seen his WHIP?

but even if you lose him, you are being compensated with a high draft pick, probably someone better than Semien

Right. That's the old Dodger way. Break the guy into the big leagues in the bullpen. The Sox have done it successfully with Buehrle and Sale.

It's a different world.

You have to assume you have Rondon for six years of MLB service maximum. I wouldn't waste a day of that time in a bullpen. Let him master his craft as a minor league starter. Boras will be grabbing them by the balls and squeezing tight by year 4 and won't let go until free agency has started...Cubs will have the same problem with Bryant

Hahn got Garcia and Montas for Jake Peavy, last year. That is a robbery.

I don't know if Bernstine realizes it, but there is no catcher tree, where you just go pick one. How many really good catchers are there? Just give me a guy who can call a game, block a ball in the dirt, and hit 10 HRs.

Kirkwood got served.

But in fairness, they offered 5 years and $85. Everyone understands Samardzija wants way more, and I think most teams are smart enough not to give him way more. At least not until he proves he can be good for another year.

Which is why I am not the least bit troubled about losing Semien.

The only cost of this trade is $10 million, which they would have had to pay to some starter anyway.

Right, I'd sign Shark for a reason 3-4 year contract. But that's b/c I don't trust the guy!!!! Obviously given his track record and contract demands it's easy to see why he was attained for a possibly low price. Last year we saw Beane backed into a corner "going for it" by trading a top-5 SS prospect in all of baseball for a converted reliever having a career year. Now he was a position where he could take his time and sell high. Interesting to say the least.

Yeah, but it's probably an even better idea in the current climate. To me, having him dust guys in AAA would be wasting him. He'll be a valuable guy at the back end of the pen, which is more important than ever. The only fear I might have is that you run into a Chapman situation where the guy is so damn good in relief you're reluctant to stretch him back out. You want a guy like that giving you 200 innings if he's capable.

If they think Rodon is better off learning the ropes while working out of the major league pen then that's what they should do. They shouldn't let an agent influence how a player is developed.

My unreasonable wish list for the rest of the off season is move Danks and give his money to Melky Cabreara.

Dunn and Konerko gone is almost $17 million off the books, and two lead anchors off the roster.

The deal is about to be announced. 4 players from the Sox (Bassitt and Semien known) and 2 from the A's (one of them is Shark).

How is that applicable right now? You think Hahn only did this to win headlines?

It might not be relevant but Frank would be screaming about how off season titles dont matter if The Cubs made significant moves (im sure he has on this board actually)
