They're saving their pennies for a late run at Jon Lester.

They did make the qualifying offer but a 30 year old wasn't going to take a 1 year deal when it was his time to break the bank

They had their hearts set on Andrew Miller. Plus they have Betances already.

I heard they wouldn't give him the 4th year and the Sox did.

In reviewing Yankee boards, they consider it poor management to have signed Miller rather than Robertson to essentially the same contract.

Yankee fans wanted him back

But what are they saying on the racquetball boards?

I like this Robertson guy. Not really a power pitcher. the loss of a couple MPH shouldn't kill him. light workload throughout major/minor career. Never had a bad year ever in minors or majors. Only risk is really injury of course.

Less pressure on the southside than he had in New York.

Dellin Betances :: 2014 Stats :: NYY GP: 70 HR: 4 R: 15 H: 46 BB: 24 SO: 135 IP: 90.0 W: 5 L: 0 SV: 1 ERA: 1.40 WHIP: 0.78 BB: 24 SO: 135 H: 46 HR: 4 HLD: 22 BLSV: 4 R: 15 CG: 0 SHO: 0 WAR: 3.7

now to give you a comparison...

David Robertson :: 2014 Stats :: NYY GP: 63 HR: 7 R: 23 H: 45 BB: 23 SO: 96 IP: 64.1 W: 4 L: 5 SV: 39 ERA: 3.08 WHIP: 1.06 BB: 23 SO: 96 H: 45 HR: 7 HLD: 0 BLSV: 5 R: 23 CG: 0 SHO: 0 WAR: 1.2

so if you're a SABR disciple like beerstain you can simply say LOOK AT THE WAR. BETANCES HAS 3.7 AND ROBERTSON HAS 1.2 SO WITHOUT A DOUBT BETANCES IS THE BETTER PITCHER! i'd say that 1.40/0.78 with 135K in 90IP > 3.08/1.06 with 96K in 64.1IP. there's also the part where they basically gave up the same # of hits and walks in roughly the same # of IP, although betances is slightly better on all fronts as is evidenced by that 0.76 WHIP for dellin to david's 1.06.

robertson was 1.08/1.13 as the #1 setup man in 2011 and i reckon as long as he kept it up he was going to be the closer-in-waiting for the yankees, so after acing his surprise audition in 2012 and joining the rest of the world in waiting for the neverending mariano rivera goodbye tour to end (cuz man he didnt even play for all these other teams and they're showering him with gifts like robin yount just retired and milwaukee is having robin yount day) not to mention the yankees were paying mariano 10-15mil/yr since 03, and it was 9.5mil the 2 years before that.... so now that they've seen that they're able to bring up/along young bullpen arms from their system that can flat out dominate in a relief role (cuz dont forget that joba the hutt had his !!!!!!! before they tried to make him a closer and he's never been the same since, tho he had flashes this year) they can spend 15mil/yr on one of the numerous areas of need where they'd be better suited to spend that 15mil/yr, cuz you know the yankees are always thrifty with their cash like that.

TL;DR = based on 2014 betances is a better pitcher than robertson, he's way cheaper, and having spent like ~175+mil on their closer SINCE THE YEAR TWOOOOO THOUUUUUSSSSAAANNNNDDDD!!!! maybe they've seen the light in realizing that they dont have to dole out premium $$$ for a good-enough closer on a maybe-wildcard team in 2015/near-future?

betances had one of the most, if not the most, amazing statistical seasons ever for a reliever.

oh yeah and earlier when i uhhh.... unsheathed my SABR, i had completely forgotten about the other reason they let robertson walk:

andrew miller. my little IRC bot with the stats is down but he too had ome of those ~1.80/0.90 ERA/WHIPS with ~100k in 60-70IP.... he didnt get used as much as betances, but girardi hasn't named a closer yet.

so yeah they had 2 guys go absoutely HAM last year, although betances was more exclusively the "security blankey" like marmol used to be for piniella. i'm sure there's a spirited argument (and maybe a MLBPA grievance re: closer vs mid-reliever salaries) if betances is better for the yankees as a closer or as a put-out-fires-anytime guy..... but either way, that dude's a fucking beast.

robertson is very nice and all that, he's had nearly 2 full seasons of top-end closing (cuz i wanna say he missed a month last year?) but when it's time to pay closer salaries even the yankees could be a bit more thrifty than d-rob.

As Spring Training is nearing to an end my sense is the Yankee let him walk because he can't get batters out and is a future member of the 60-day DL.

Why are Cub fans so jealous? Because half their team is in Iowa and half their ballpark is missing?

The Yankees have claimed David Robertson on revocable waivers.

The Yanks have a couple good young catchers in Gary Sanchez and John Ryan Murphy. Do it.

Gary Sanchez was supposed to be up last year.

Perhaps good dolphin will finally acknowledge Robertson sucks, is overpaid and no one wants a closer who can't close.

I guess the bouncer at the front door finally let you in. It takes RPB leaving.

I saw that yesterday.

If the Sox put him on the market today, they would have a handful of offers for him tomorrow.
