I've watched about 90 seconds of the Devs this year, mostly to ascertain that new color analyst Kenny Daneyko does indeed sound exactly like Jesse Ventura, and considered it 89 seconds too many. So in lieu of any insight of my own, enjoy this piece from the New York Post about how Lamoriello needs to give up the ghost and tank so that they don't repeat their critical error in the 1980s, letting Pittsburgh tank for Mario Lemieux and settling for Kirk Muller.

http://nypost.com/2014/12/06/devils-need-a-nosedive/

Quote:
Thirty-one years after deciding to go the straight-and-narrow and thereby blow their shot at Mario Lemieux, the Devils get a do-over. They’re going to need a do-over sooner rather than later anyway, what with the plethora of aging pending free agents on the roster, so why not now?

It only makes sense to get on with it — and the process of joining the race for the bottom and the corresponding chance at drafting Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel — as quickly as possible and without pretense.

Obviously, a plan to dump — veterans, not games — contradicts everything for which Lamoriello has stood for throughout his career at Providence and in New Jersey. But these aren’t normal times. The Devils likely are going to miss the playoffs a third straight time for the first time since the franchise was in its infancy in the ’80s following the move from Colorado. And the owners are the same guys overseeing the massive tank job with the NBA’s 76ers.

. . .

Thirty-one years after founding father John McMullen cast the vote that broke the front office tie between those in the organization who wanted to tank for Mario (club president Bob Butera and director of player personnel Marshall Johnston on that side) and those who wanted to go the straight and narrow (general manager Max McNab and coach Tom McVie), the Devils get another shot at this.

It's one of my favorites. Wasn't sure whether to use that one or "Lost in the Flood."

Holy shit, what is this Jersey roster? I've never actually seen the whole thing at once. I knew they had Jagr and Havlat and just brought back Scott Gomez, but Tuomo Ruutu? Michael Ryder? Scott Clemmensen?!? Jordin Tootoo?!? Is this a joke?

EDIT: Nordstrom reassigned to Rockford, Morin to Rockford on a conditioning assignment which is very peculiar because he was never on injured reserve. There were rumors that he was, how you say, availing himself of the press-box accommodations. Interesting.

I thought Jen Patterson already landed her a hockey player?

Haha. Nick Boynton would fit in well with this Devils roster, actually. Lines for tonight:

Dainius Zubrus - Scott Gomez - Jaromir Jagr
Tuomo Ruutu - Adam Henrique - Michael Ryder
Martin Havlat - Jacob Josefson - Mike Sislo
Jordin Tootoo - Stephen Gionta - Steve Bernier
Andy Greene - Damon Severson
Jon Merrill - Marek Zidlicky
Eric Gelinas - Peter Harrold
Corey Schneider
Scott Clemmensen
IR/Scratched: Patrik Elias, Mike Cammalleri, Travis Zajac, Bryce Salvador, Ryane Clowe, Adam Larsson

THIS IS AN NHL TEAM IN 2014-15

That was one of the worst periods they've played all year. Devils dominated possession, Hawks looked like they've never even played hockey before. Gotta hope this was one of those first-period bursts that tired teams have before they crap out in the second and third, because that was abysmal.

Well I spent the first half of the period playing league of legends. What I saw did not look good.

Bicks on a 3 on one taking the shot himself usually does not work out but this time I guess it did.

I've been meaning to ask for quite some time now ... and CH already thinks poorly of me so I can't do any more damage, I don't think ... do the thread song titles have anything to do with the team/venue/event or are they purely randomly selected? I'm neither denigrating nor venerating, just (wait for it .....) curious.

I try to pick song lyrics from artists from the same place as the opposition: Bruce Springsteen for New Jersey, Blue Oyster Cult/Billy Joel for Long Island, the Dismemberment Plan for Washington, Leonard Cohen/Arcade Fire for Montreal, the Weakerthans for Winnipeg, Uncle Tupelo for St. Louis. Failing that, I just try to match lyrics with the name of the city/team. And failing THAT, I use Wilco or Radiohead.

Better period, but it looks like I was right to sound the * ROOKIE GOALTENDER ALERT * on this one. Kinkaid's stopping everything short of Jersey's utter defensive breakdown here.

I have to write crap for which I actually get paid all day tomorrow/Thursday, so if someone wants to pick their favorite Boston song (I think they recorded three songs ever, right?) for the Boston game, that'd be gr8.

I refuse to believe such a thing exists.

You could go with that one whiney puss-rock chart by Dave Loggins just to really screw with people ... James Taylor if you really want to hear it from people ... Midnight Rambler by the Stones I think would be more appropos for this conclave of folks except nobody here knows w/out the internet who Albert DeSalvo is.

I'll shut up now.

This period is going about as poorly as possible. Ah, well, under 10 left and down 1, Hawk should start chucking right about now. Textbook Slackhawks game.

Cmon. The answer should be readily available in a Cars lyric somewhere.

I'm not entirely sure the Devils are currently considered an official NHL team as currently comprised, so thie evening has been particularly vexing to this point.

Blackhawks kind of have the not interested sign out.

Well that's what's depressing. I mean, by rights they should have that sign out by now but only because they should've had a four goal lead by the end of the first.
