TL, DR version: A family run chinese place knows that it is lying about prices on their website, and got called out on it. The customer who called them out on it appears to be slightly insane. Both parties seem equally assholish to me.

The customer. I can't stand people who live to make others miserable. To take it to the lengths this asshole did pisses me off.

No doubt that the customer is a crazy asshole.

But the chinese place is definitely unethical.

Run your business properly. Who cares that the guy is a douchebag? Most people in Boston are. Can't handle pedantic fuckwads? Get out of Boston.

This should be in our rolling thread about how awful Gawker is.

I considered putting it there, but I'm bored and legitimately couldn't decide who the bigger douchebag in the story was.

Maybe I'm naive. Scratch that. I most definitely am. But I didn't read anything specific other than the online price was different than advertised. Couldn't it have been an honest mistake where the prices had been recently changed or did I miss something?

The chinese place immediately acknowledged to the customer that the online prices are outdated. I have to agree with the customer when he responded by telling them to update their goddamn website or take it down altogether. It's blatant false advertising.

Burneko is the biggest douche of all. In matters of douchebaggery, always err on the side of Brooklyn bloggers.

There is a restaurant near where I live that charges exactly .9% too much for tax on every sale.

They are certainly ripping everyone off. I was curious, so I checked all the relevant taxing bodies, and I even compared their tax to another place on the same street - there is no doubt.

Its not my job to narc them out, though - I just don't go there.

And they keep 5% of the tax they charge

Tax has become part of the profit for some businesses. They really don't question it.

Why are we blaming the customer here exactly? His reaction may be over the top but that doesn't make you wrong.

This perfessor is a little extreme. They offered a refund of the difference but he wanted to interpret the law and skip any procedural aspects and levy a fine. How does anyone not know that he may be looking at a cached web page? If there is a disclaimer on the website, as there is in most cases, then the refund offered or the offer of a compensatory item should be sufficient. Genius should have asked for the total bill amount, including delivery, before completing the transaction (Ten Foot Baffoe can lecture you on this).

Having peeked in through the back door of too many Chinese restaurants you can keep the food. Its all buyer beware, we've got a communication problem, and then how about some egg rolls (more of the same crap)?

The reaction surprised me as well. Of course the customer is an asshole. But he didn't blatantly scam who knows how many customers like the Chinese place did. After thinking about this some more it's not even really close. The restaurant owner is definitely the bigger douchebag.

Looks like the customer tried to extort $8 out of the restaurant by citing an incorrect statute. So he's no boyscout, but definitely falls way short of the restaurant which has been pocketing an extra $1.00 on every single menu item they sell for who knows how long.
