Giants offered 168

Lester signed for 6 years, $155M not including options, which are never included when talking about guarantees. I had guessed 6/~$150M. This is overpaying. Boston offered 6/$135M. But the Cubs wanted him and were willing to pay the price.

Now Cubs fans hope it won't be regretted.

He'll get more than Lester per year for and probably overall

I can't believe some team will give him 8 years guaranteed at $26-$27 (or more) per. He was just a guy before the last two seasons. He hasn't proven enough. Scherzer has about a flat 3.00 ERA since April 2013.

Arrieta has a 3.10 ERA since July 2013.

Is Arrieta just as proven as Scherzer? Should the Cubs lock up Arrieta now for $23 a season before he gets close to an open market?

Arrieta appears to be the crown jewel of the sign/flip acquisitions from this front office.

Now with Travis Wood/Castillo/Valbuena as trade chips, they can really get this roster built now.

That's why Lester was so huge.

I just don't see who is going to give it to him. But Boras has been great in the past at getting a single team to negotiate against itself.

Nobody wants the bums you don't want. I know it's easy for you to see that with the White Sox (Viciedo, Danks). You should be able to see it with the Cubs too.

Viciedo has value but not Danks unless they eat 2/3 of that contract.

Castillo & Valbuena have good value and Wood decent value as a 5th starter. Couple these guys with the Vogelbach's of the world, and they can do some business.

He certainly has been. But I think his desperation to win the big prize last season caused him to make a couple huge mistakes and now he seems to have gone off the deep end.

I dont know why everyone is saying that. Seems to me he's doing what he always does.

Donaldson is going to need a payday. Moss might have peaked in the first half this year and they had 0 chance of re signing Samardzija

The Donaldson deal was okay. If you can keep Lawrie on the field he might be as good plus he got the pitchers.

I don't like the Samardzija deals from the Oakland standpoint. It reminds me of what Kenny did in overpaying for Swisher and then giving him away for nothing.

The only way the Samardzija deal with the Cubs was going to turn out as a Beane positive was if Oakland had won the World Series.

Or if he traded for prospects that ended up outperforming Russell and McKinney could have been a wash

Maybe that will happen. I just don't see it though.

It will be hard to outplay Barry Larkin with more power and a young Willie Mays

The #Cubs get their man in Jon Lester, and Joe Maddon says: "We won the lottery.'' They now expect to make playoffs http://usat.ly/1D7Pc8Y

And I expect them to fail miserably. Now, if only our players would stop dying off.

I'm not sure if you're criticizing the view, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't want to say the rebuild is fully complete...but we're almost at the precipice of the large mountain that the Cubs had to climb.

Results were always expected. And we're getting to the point where they are to be expected in the near future.

If the Cubs don't make the playoffs this year, I'll understand. But they better be competing for one.

Maybe they'll surprise and pick up a strong bat.

I don't think Lester will ever win more than 15 games for the Cubs.

Maybe Hendry's had enough time to poison the ear of Cashman by now.
