I've heard this. I don't know the Cubs franchise history at all. Is it true?

No Cubs manager prior to Dusty Baker has ever gone on to manage another MLB team?

False.

Leo the Lip went to the Astros and managed them after being fired from the Cubs in 72.

Ha, good one.

Thanks BD Scott.

I think this one should be good for a free beer or two tonight at the Pub off of some Cubbie friends. Whoops, or not?

Nope,
He mostly coached the bench, or whatever it is that a bench coach does.

Wonder if he's the only one before Baker:

Jim Marshall went to Oakland, Lee Elia managed the Phillies for a while, Jim Lefebvre took over for Garner in Milwaukee.

There were probably others.

Not sure about total history, but it seems to be the case of recent managers here. Usually, their managerial aspirations end here.

Frank managed several team in the 75-91 period: Indians (player/manager at one point), Giants and Orioles. He later got a chance with the Expos/Nats from 2002 to 2006 (I think these are right)

He got several second chances.

Alou is more black than my cracker ass :-) Sorry, bad example.

Is that was Dusty did here? He managed?

I thought he just cashed checks to pay off his bill to the IRS.

Pretty funny that Hendry couldn't help himself from paying so much for Dusty - even though there were ZERO other MLB openings (other than SF) and he had the IRS after him for money.

That's a low blow. Dusty was not a good fit here. I hope he does better in CINN. Truthfully, I really don't give a dam what Dusty is doing. I just want the Cubs to win!

Lou has not proven he is a better fit then Dusty. He "dropped the ball" in the playoffs and failed to make a couple key decisions that may or may not have cost the Cubs the series against Arizona. Sounds very Dusty-like to me.

Seattle wanted Dusty too Grid. You don't win 3 Manager of the Year awards or go to the playoffs as many times as he has if you are just cashing checks. I would have been pissed that the Cubs decided to spend $400M after I left too. I heard a lot of people say a good manager would have won 81 games with the team the Cubs had last season. Funny thing a HOF manager barely won 81 games with a team that was way better than the 2006 Cubs. The team Dusty had was bad.

I'm too damned lazy to look it up - but when the Cubs hired Dusty Baker, there were no other major league openings, so I don't buy this Seattle wanted Dusty stuff Nas.

The team Dusty had in '04 was better than the '07 Cubs too btw.

Jim Lefebvre is the right answer. And Lee Elia was the last one before him. We wondered the same thing yesterday and looked it up.

Bench coach enjoys the players, dugout, clubhouse.

Don't forget another manager of the year winner Don Baylor. He managed the Rockies and then the Cubs.

Yes it was. That's the season that drives me crazy. He kept them in the race even with all the injuries. Then they get their guys back and they wet the bed the last week of the season. It all started with the Victor Diaz 3 run homer. I hated the guy when he was at Clemente and he made me hate him even more.

He kept them in it but the players wet the bed. Interesting perspective.
