This is the last week of shows. It will be sad to see Craig go. It's probably the only late nite show I can watch. He's been on fire these last few months, and I've been DVR'ing a bunch lately. My work meeting in NY today was cancelled, so I've spent some time watching some clips on youtube today. It's hilarious how great this show was with only a robot sidekick, and a pantomime horse, and everything pretty much ad-libbed between them.

Some great Craig clips:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjfEhESvpdU
Serge calls in. Probably my favorite of the characters that "call" Craig.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXJjT8GdiVA
Craig reads Secretariat a bedtime story. Secretariat might be the greatest character in all of late night tv.

Any other Craig fans here? Don Tiny?

Someone probably not as funny as Craig Ferguson.

As great a show as it is (soon was), I gotta say the one that sticks out in my mind is the Tom Snyder 'tribute' show he did w/ Stephen Fry a few years back where it was just conversation between two really well-rounded completely unpretentious fellas.

There's been a couple of those "special" episodes over the years. I remember reading about one where he had on Desmond Tutu for a full hour, and did a serious show. The episodes where he eulogized the deaths of his mother and father were also well done.

Late Night TV is dead to begin with. We've heard those jokes multiple times throughout the day.

oh shit this is also the last week of the colbert report, which i fell off of watching as appointment TV everyday like ~3-4 years ago, but gradually diminished my watching from "appointment TV" to "most nights" to "a couple times a week" to "meh" ---- and when they announced he was going to CBS next year i told myself that i'd make it a point to watch the last few months, but by and large i just couldn't get myself in front of the TV at 1030 to watch the 1-2 worthwhile segments (cuz who cares about guests?) and now it's the last damn week. last time i watched they did presumably the last esteban colberto / colberto reporto with the CHICAS!!!!! and all that, and that had to be about ~3+ weeks ago right around thanksgiving.

the colbert report was an awesome show for the first half of its run. he used to appeal to more of an "it-getter" demographic and the show had a rapier wit as it'd do things like, example, take on conspiracy ppl when they were talking about the proposed private/toll superhighway that was gonna divide the nation in 2! stephen took it one step further to say this conspiracy had been around forever because THERE'S ROADS.... ROADS EVERYWHERE! and he was really subtle with clever references that rewarded you for being an "it-getter" and etc. as colbert got more popular/established the show got more straightforward and tame, but even in the last few years he still did some cool/fun stuff like make up his own PAC to give us a real-world example of how PACs work for politics, and that's the kind of stuff he always did to vault himself beyond the daily show in terms of being the better show out of the 2 comedy central gave us from 10-11pm.

as for craigy ferg (to actually be on topic for once in my life) his show was one i hardly ever stayed up for to watch (and then even if i was up it was never really in the foreground of my thoughts cuz it was maybe like 1-2 times a year i'd be like "oh yeah craig" and get to it) but holy shit his show was a masterclass in macking celebrity chicks. kate mara comes to mind as one of many chicks who practically threw themselves at craig and people have gone and compiled some compilation videos showing off his prowess with the wimmenfolk here and here. recommended viewing if you wanna see the kind of demeanor requisite for landing actresses and/or high-level/caliber women.

ah well, it sucks to know that two shows i technically like/d (with one being just about my favorite thing on TV from 06-10, the report of course) are gone and stephen colbert's gonna have to take on the tried-n-true LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW FORMAT which will exist until the end of time, or the entertainment industry eschews free promotion for their new stuff and sends the star/s of the movie/show out there to go be "just like us" with the veritable-pimp-for-the-entertainment-industry hosts out there whose jobs exist to draw people in and consume the advertisements for media endeavor X coming out soon! dave letterman's rant about being a pimp for the entertainment industry (while he was interviewing paris hilton, nicole richie, lindsay lohan or somebody of that ilk) was perhaps the last real/vintage moment he had.... but then again i think letterman was basically a 80s thing that you were either there for or not, much like the colbert report was a late-00s thing and conan o'brien was a late 90s thing and etc etc

GODSPEED, GENTLEPEOPLE, GODSPEED! so is craigy ferg just gonna keep on hosting that gameshow and maybe do a few movies? or is he gonna try to get another talk show somewhere since he was basically the best thing going in the format from the middle of his tenure onwards?

Yeah, for some reason ladies were practically ready to go down on him during many interviews.

stormageddon's dad! comeon who doesn't remember "the lodger" and whatever that 2nd cybermen episode from series 7 of doctor who was?

from what i can tell james corden is just a big fat british everyman along the lines of chris farley or perhaps moreso kevin james. he had some big sitcom out there called "Gavin and Stacey" that i think was technically popular but also massively despised, so it must have been utterly polarizing like the big bang theory or something. when the announcement of corden for the late late show came i remember a whole bunch of brits being like "good, let america have him. the sooner he gets the hell out of england the better. we really owe the yanks a debt of gratitude for first taking piers morgan off of our hands and now corden? how soon can they also take danny dyer and make it a trifecta?"

so yeah james corden is pretty much a big fat "LOL I'M THE FAT GUY!" british hack who many out there are glad to see go. i guess he's not especially funny or endearing and his act wore thin (perhaps about the only thing about him that's truly "thin") so i reckon he's very very likely to repackage all of his shit that worked with "Gavin and Stacey" and didn't work afterwards for a new american audience, which means that he'll likely endear himself to a few people who are like "LOL HE'S FAT! ISN'T THAT FUNNY?!?!" while most despise him, but then since it's not like he's a really talented guy and/or great comedic mind unless he gets a great writing staff it's not like he's going to figure to settle into a groove after 2-3 years and then start bringing the legendary stuff. odds are if anything works early on in his tenure you'll be seeing a lot of it since the guy is pretty much a fat hack whose main joke is "LOL I'M FAT"

but hey IIRC he likes arsenal (as he'd call into the latenight talkSPORT program here and there, and the host andy goldstein or whoever was desperate to get him to co-host the show for an episode or two at sometime.... which i think he's technically done. so add that to his renaissance man credentials if you want. and hey anyone down with arsenal can't be all bad in my book, eh?

yeah man and it's way more than kate mara (altho she was prolly the most egregious example of this phenomenon) cuz i remember tuning in one night and seeing an episode from a week he did in scotland; he had mila kunis as his guest and they filmed a piece where they were walking around a graveyard with craig doing some very solid improv and even ashton's chick was seemingly !!!! at his game.

i guess there's something to be said about the powers of a british/scottish/UK/etc accent and having at least a modicum of improv wit to be able to pull some bullshit out of your ass and get the chicks laughing.... keep 'em laughing and they'll eat your BS right out of your hands as you continue to fling it wholesale and hope that a decent amount of it sticks. evidently craigy ferg's bullshit stuck most of the time.

ahhh yeah a perfunctory look at his wikipedia page (after my post/s) seems to fortify the viewpoint i had about the guy (and his one go-to joke being "LOL I'M FAT!!!!!")

Rise to prominence
From 2000 through early 2005, Corden starred in the British television series Fat Friends as Jamie Rymer. He garnered a nomination for the 2000 Royal Television Society Award for Network Newcomer On Screen for his work.

so yeah i guess from there he did some one man stage production that worked on london's west end (or whatever their theatre district is) and it got him to broadway and whatnot. and then gavin and stacey was 2007-2010 and that got him big (or well, famous in his case =) and ever since G&S he's been a proper british celebrity which he's used to be TELEVISION'S JAMES CORDEN for numerous real life things, and then he's certainly got the buzz factor when he, example, guest stars on doctor who.

but when it's all said and done, yeah, when he first breaks into TV starting in a show called "Fat Friends" welp that goes to show you that he carved out a niche for himself being the go-to funny fat guy which kevin james has done out here (who's hyped up for PAUL BLART: MALL COP 2???) so i feel fairly safe/justified in saying that he's basically british kevin james.

His begin the show puttin-on-the-hits lip syncs are evergreen youtube favorites:

Gunther and the off-beat brother.

his special episode thing reminded too much of a very special "Facts of Life" territory.

Yeah, I'm not digging the game show

He would be a great addition to TBS in the slot following Conan, or he would be awesome on premium cable if someone like HBO wanted to get into the nightly show business. I know he jokes about cursing, but he would be great if he had no filter.

I never gave him a chance. You are right,I like weird, quirky types when it comes to comedy. I do like Seth Meyers delivery and his knack for not being loud and obnoxious during interviews. The problem with his show is those two broads that write for him. They keep coming out as some weird, wacky character that is just that but never funny. He needs to work on the skits.

The last show was great. The "Bang your Drum" number was fun. Leno looked like he had a few drinks in him and was in "I don't have any fucks to give" mode. While this show wasn't for the masses, it was my favorite late night show on one of the 'major' networks.

Yes, the musical number that opened was great. I'm guessing that may have been the last thing they filmed, and maybe it would have been a great way to close the broadcast out.

I thought the "Newhart" ending was kinda stupid. It's been parodied before many times and I didn't feel like it was needed.

Also played the Sorprano's thing in the very last shot. This was maybe the second time I watched his show. Pretty good, when is the next one?
