The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Jeremy Morin to the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenseman Tim Erixon. Morin had reportedly been frustrated about his playing time and gave a “play me or trade me” ultimatum. It appears he got his wish.

Morin had struggled to find his way in the Blackhawks lineup and never seemed to gain the trust of head coach Joel Quenneville. He had zero points in 15 games this season, which led to a lot of healthy scratches and he was later sent to the AHL on a conditioning assignment. All of those factors, plus the ultimatum, made a big dent in the once-promising prospect's trade value.

The 23-year-old, who was a second-round selection of the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and acquired by Chicago in the trade for Dustin Byfuglien, has been a victim of trying to find a spot on a star-laden team.

Though Morin has seen stints in five seasons, he's never played more than 24 games in a single campaign. That came last season, during which he registered 11 points.

Despite the lack of NHL work, Morin has been extremely productive at the AHL level. Last season, Morin had 47 points in 47 games. He had 30 goals for the Rockford IceHogs in 2012-13 as well.

Morin was given the best opportunity to seize a full-time role this season with the Blackhawks, but wasn't able to take advantage.

He should get another chance at significant NHL time for an injury-riddled Blue Jackets club. Perhaps Morin finds his NHL legs in an organization that could end up relying on him more than Chicago ever needed to.

Meanwhile, defenseman Tim Erixon will be on his fourth NHL organization by age 23. He has appeared in 70 NHL games over the last four years.

Erixon is a former first-round pick of the Calgary Flames. He refused to sign with Calgary, which forced them to trade him to the New York Rangers. Erixon didn't last long in that organization as he became part of the Blue Jackets' return in the blockbuster deal that sent Rick Nash to Broadway.

Erixon has 13 points over 70 NHL contests, 52 of which have come with Columbus. This season, Erixon has appeared in 19 games and has been averaging a career-high 16:58 per game. It will be interesting to see where he fits in with the Blackhawks plans as they have built a rather large stable of young defensemen that are on the borderline of NHL readiness.

Well, he plays a ton of minutes so there's that.

I get the feeling with all of the young defensemen being stockpiled that Seabrook will be the first cap casualty by the trade deadline.

On the surface that looks like a good call. But I thought he's been playing very well this season. I love this defensive core.

Seabrook isn't going anywhere during the season.

I thought we'd get a 3rd or 4th for Morin, so to get a roster player, even a project like Erixon, is nice. We need to establish something on the third pairing and manage Rozsival's minutes better. As his workload has increased, he's looked atrocious.

Had a nasty turnover last night that resulted in a tally if I recall correctly.

That was Duncan Keith, though maybe Rozsival had one too. All of Rozsival's brainfarts are starting to blend together for me.

Oh Keith had one too yesterday. I was thinking that might have been Keith's worst game of the season last night.

I think the same. Just another defenseman to consider slotting in for when Oduya & Rosival become free agents, with Seabrook definitely being on the trade block during the offseason. With the talent at the wings, Morin didn't have much of a chance to crack the top 9.

Dahlbeck went back to Rockford with this move, so we're now carrying seven defensemen, twelve forwards, and three goaltenders. I'd like to see a thirteenth forward come up when Raanta or Darling (but probably Raanta) goes back down, preferably the long-awaited Mark McNeill if he's healthy. He could obviate Bickell.

From The Tribune...

The 23-year-old Erixon has six points (1G, 5A), including five power-play points (1G, 4A), in 19 games with the Blue Jackets this season.

He'll be in the lineup with Rozsival tonight. New team + old ass = less than eight minutes for the third pair.

When do I start getting concerned about the number of players who seem to end up in Q's dawghouse and get shipped off to towns in hockey hell?

That's the thing, I don't know if he is good or not. I need to see more of him. I thought Leddy was going to be really good.

My question comes down to player development. Are these guys that are supposed to come up and produce getting enough of a chance.

Do you miss Barker, Skille, Pirri, Hayes/Hayes or Leddy?

Blackhawks should try to pry away a goaltending prospect from the Blue Jackets; skip the Swedes and go for the Fin they picked up in the recent draft, Joonas Korpisalo, or a Latvian named Elvis https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Elvis+Merzlikins

Right now? None of them. In 2-3 years, I think Leddy will be missed.

They better hope Teuvo lives up to the hype and can grow in the Blackhawks system. Hossa will continue to have his skills diminish and Sharp might be gone soon as well. They need a third star if they are going to compete for a cup over the next few years. That said, I realize this all might not matter when the cap destruction comes.

I miss Leddy. For all his faults in his own end, we took him for granted as a known quantity on the third pair, which has become a real carousel this year. Given second-pair ice time with the Islanders, he's really thrived as an offensive defenseman (though he is just as liable to get torched the other way, as the Isles' meager differential would hint). Still, of Leddy and Oduya, one had to go now and the other after the season; Leddy's contract was worth more now than Oduya's would have been, and neither would have been worth much of anything after the season.

I had such high hopes for Morin, but let's face facts: he couldn't make the adjustment from a top-sixer on a farm team to a bottom-sixer on a Cup contender, and multiple prospects lapped him. While it is troublesome that basically a whole class of prospects flunked out, let's remember that we did get good things in return: Olsen and Jimmy Hayes became Versteeg at 50% retention, Pirri became Nick Schmaltz, Morin became Erixon, and Brandon Bollig became not having Brandon Bollig. All things considered, look around the league, and it could be much worse.

Dustin Byfuglien, Akim Aliu, Ben Eager and Brent Sopel
traded
Jeremy Morin, Kevin Hayes, Justin Holl, Marty Reasoner, Joey Crabb

Morin - Tim Erixon
Kevin Hayes - unsigned pud
Justin Holl - ECHL
Marty Reasoner - Jeff Taffe

So for the Byfuglien, Aliu, Eager and Sopel package we have Tim Erixon.

Woof

Ouch.

That 2010 draft is not fun to look at, either.

Kevin Hayes: pud
Ludvig Rensfeldt: unsigned
Justin Holl: ECHL
Kent Simpson: part of the wrong side of a blowout against Toronto, was never seen again
Stephen Johns: we're waiting...
Joakim Nordstrom: fourth-liner at best but probably just a tweener/AHLAS
Rob Flick: Aldi Andrew Shaw, traded him for who gives a fuck
not even reciting the rest of the names

So far we have a handful of games from Nordstrom and a free #54 pick next year to show for that draft. So there you go, don't close the book on the Byfuglien trade yet! We still have that #54 pick!

Leddy is good and on his way to possibly being really good. He's doing great with the Islanders.

Your question has already been answered. Just go look at how the guys we trade are doing on their new teams, all of them are doing really well now that they are getting regular playing time.

Its a nice problem to have here in Chicago...team is so good that the young players aren't getting the opportunities to develop.

I don't know if all of them are doing well with more playing time. Take Pirri for example.

I thought the plan was to draft well, train to the system and then trade off guys that are looking to get significant increases in salary to battle the cap. Instead it seems they are going to do really well until Hossa and Sharp leave and then we will be stuck in the same boat Pittsburgh has been for a while now.

Funny how Leddy's name hasn't been mentioned all season until TVR got hurt.

Oh, and until we played the Isles.

I believe I noted Leddy's strong start somewhere in the NHL folder. I also believe I noted that he's been exposed as a poor defender in the absence of Hamonic and Boychuk. But yes, the Blackhawks successfully replaced Leddy (as a minutes-eater if not as an offense-generator) with van Riemsdyk until someone shattered his knee. That was good, up until the part about the knee.
