So North Korea has won? I don't like this. Many others will attempt to do the same in the future.

If North Korea was able to keep shit like this from being forced upon an unsuspecting public then I say VIVA LA PYONGYANG!

This seemed like a movie you would love after a few pulls or after a few drinks. I wanted to see it.

Imagine if a movie like this was made about President Obama.

Oh and these guys made Pineapple Express so we should be thankful.

just release it on netflix and ondemand and it'll make its money. i guess howard can take back saying that this was the "best kind of press" to get a big box office out of the movie...cos whatever it can make is gonna be way less than what it would have made in theatres.

This movie will be an instant cult classic. I'm really excited to see it now.

We will also may look back at this as a pretty important step in the direct to home movie release evolution. They've been looking for ways to do it for a long time and if this is a success it may open up more doors for other movies to do simultaneous releases.

i think it'll be a funny movie...i mean i enjoyed "this is the end" and thought "pineapple express" had some big laughs. but the plot is nothing special, it's really pretty formulaic and stupid. but that's the point...it reminds me of "zoolander" a little.

however, you're right--it will become a cult hit simply on the merits of making a statement. it's like...downright patriotic now to see this movie, whether you want to like it or not. just to shove it in the face of the north koreans.

i wish this would've happened to "team america". it's funny how just 10 years ago, we release a movie that directly mocks kim jung il and the movie makes not even a blip on the radar...and now, we have possibly the most talked about movie of the century that is mocking the exact same thing. timing's everything.

I know its just a stoner movie but I think this has huge ramifications for the censorship (self and outside) of art in the future. It also reverberates throughout the industry resulting in even less edgy work coming out of Hollywood.

The artistic community needs to make a very loud response.

I dont understand what Sony is actually fearing by pulling this movie. North Korea wouldn't even be able to blow up a pack of firecrackers, and we're worried they're going to strike American theatres that are showing this movie? Give me a fucking break.

Shame on Sony, and shame on all the corporate execs from theaters that decided to pull the plug on this.

Exactly.

If the CIA has determined that there is a credible threat to national security due to the release of this movie, I could understand limiting showings. However, I think it is incredibly important to screen this movie.

It is completely forseeable that the next movie unfavorable to Islam gets a threat. Hell, this will embolden the fringe edge or Christianity the next time there is a movie with which it does not agree.

This move sends a message to artists at the lowest levels to not even think about creating a certain type of story as it will never see the light of day.

PLEASE HOLLYWOOD, GROW SOME BALLS! This is one of those moments where you must stand up.

This isn't just Sony's way of saving a little face because the movie is terrible?

Good for them, but it should be more than one screening.
Quote:
After Sony canceled the release of the North Korea assassination comedy The Interview, a Texas theater said it would swap the film with Paramount's 2004 film Team America: World Police for one free screening.

"We're just trying to make the best of an unfortunate situation," James Wallace, creative manager and programmer at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's Dallas/Fort Worth location, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

American flags and other patriotic items will be given out by theater employees, Wallace says.

The plot of Team America, co-written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, revolves around Kim Jong Il, the father of current North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. The posters promoting the R-rated movie in 2004 included the tagline, "Putting the 'F' Back in Freedom."

In The Interview, Seth Rogen and James Franco's characters are tasked with assassinating Kim Jong Un.

The Alamo Drafthouse movie theater in Dallas, Texas, will be showing Team America: World Police in place of The Interview on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. Wallace says that the Dallas/Fort Worth location is the only location as of now that is planning to screen the replacement film.

In a note on its website, the theater added: "THAT is how true American heroes will be celebrating this year, but if you want to let the terrorists win...well, that's your prerogative."

Sony canceled the release of The Interview earlier on Wednesday after the country's five largest theater chains all decided against showing the film, saying in a statement: "We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers."

When are the Albanians going to get up in arms about all of the Taken movies? Should those be pulled as well?

To have a major release of this major with Army forces present would just hype this movie to legendary status. Just the fact the Koreans dont understand this is a comedy, is what makes it even funnier. Have 1 showing in LA and then 2 nights later release it in a few places and then next week in more.

this is not the government blocking the movie. they would love it shown. money is the reason sony pulled it. they already lost 200+ mil, and if they showed it they would likely be running on pencils and paper within a month.

If some kind of attack actually occurs with prior warning Sony is fucked. Plus apparently Sony US was getting pressure from Mother Sony in Japan because of the delicate political situation plus the fact that they are in missile range.
