Why?

alright good doctor, let's talk about some of the kids on these here internets. i've spent a bunch of time on the internet hate machine circuit (4chan, and the video is totally worth the 3-4 mins. it's fabulous) so we're talking hackers on steroids, exploding vans, random dogs running at you, the whole 9 yards.

one of the insults exceedingly popular is when the kids come across someone who goes a bit TL;DR (too long, didn't read) they love to gang up and call said person an autist, because clearly anyone embellishing themselves in that much TL;DR HAS to live in their own autistic paradise because nobody in the real world would ever want to read anything even so much as remotely resembling that TL;DR.

as you might or might not know, i have been known to go a bit TL;DR from here to there. ergo, on sites such as the one with the exploding van, i often get called some form of an autist for having the audacity to speak.

so in lieu of that general pejorative as an insult in todays cyber-arena, i decided that when marc trestman was going on and on and on with these recent pressers that this undoubtedly got a bunch of people on /sp/ going "god, what an autist!" because he's saying a bunch of spineless shit that nobody wants to hear, and again, remember that in today's cyber-arena if you go and say something that someone tells you that THE WHOLE GROUP WOULD NEVER WANT TO HEAR, therefore you MUST live in your own autistic world where you saying such things is OK (since it is clearly NOT in this REAL WORLD we live in --- and nevermind any fundamental irony to that whole worldview where one person's tastes/preferences speak for the whole wide world. that's so not autism it's like anti-autism in effect) because that's just the way it is.

so yeah i was making fun of today's culture to call marc trestman an 2010s-internet autist. i've got a friend whose older brother and now actually the friend's son are real-autists. i dont mean to make fun of them otherwise i might cause mcneil to come here and actually make a spirited post for the 3rd time in the last 2-3 years =D

i hope that explains it.

Alternative explanation: there's some not-insignificant overlap between anti-vaxers and Speaks. Generally, Speaks is awful enough on its own because their goal is to find the gene for autism in fetuses so that mothers can more easily abort them (They won't tell you that, of course, but they want to "cure" autism, and what better way to cure it than that? Notice the drop in Down syndrome?), but to make matters worse, the same parents who insist vaccines gave their kids autism also tend to spend their money with Speaks. And as if their faith in discredited science weren't enough to cement these people as not being among America's thinkers, they donate to a charity that's more interested in "research" than helping families who need help right here and now -- families like theirs.

I'm as anti-anti-vaxer as you can be, and I think that a lot of the criticism about autismspeaks is simply because there are many controversial topics with autism and they are the #1 charity. For example, they got grief for funding research to find a link between autism and vaccines. That is BS. There should be research to find a link using true scientific methods. Those studies finding no link are vitally important.

If there is a link we should know.
