There isn't a right or wrong way to appreciate music.

I am just easily able to segment it.

1) What is influential or important.
2) What I think is of the highest quality.

1 and 2 may not be the same. There are bands/artists I hate that score very highly on #1 and bands/artists I love that have literally no influence or importance.

But you have to admit all opinions aren't equal. You can like Nelly all you want. It's your right. But when you suggest his music is "higher quality" than the Beatles, it's just wrong.

It's no different than someone saying Cameron Hughes Front 242 is superior to 1938 Beaulieu Reserve Cab. It's an opinion. Just not a good one.

I do understand it. Many of these thoughts actually came from a college class I took on the very subject.

If we want to have a different thread about importance and significance of bands then we can do that and I'll tell you just how important Metallica is even though I don't like them.

I'll ask you though. When did music peak? Someone giving me an answer to this is really the only way to say I am wrong.

where do you stand man? i'm totally with you above, but cannot see any way shape or form that an educated music person would prefer anything Oasis did to Revolver. I'm only sleeping?? Dude, c'monman!!!

Let me point out I didn't say Nelly was "higher quality" than The Beatles. It's not all music being better simply because it is newer. You can still have horrible music made now.

I think it is fair but it also leaves the door wide open for a guy like me to think that many modern bands are better than The Beatles.

I'm still not sure anyone has actually said I'm wrong on that though.

The Beatles are lame.

That being said music today is pretty much god awful. At least the goofy boy band no instrument playing fucks. I got no room for that. Fuckin spice girls.

I like a lot of bad music. I don't know why.

Just like when I'm watching Step Brothers I know it's not Forrest Gump or Schindler's List.

I think there are and have been bands better than the Beatles, but that doesn't seem to be your argument. I was under the impression you were suggesting that music got progressively better as if it were evolving toward an apex.

It's possible there are better bands than the Beatles. I don't know of any that had that combination of quality and quantity though. Oasis certainly isn't one of them though. At least be not absurd with something like U2 or REM or Chuck Berry...

I'm suddenly quite uncomfortable. I'm gonna go get me some Wild Turkey and try to drink myself into an alcohol induced amnesia and pretend I never saw this thread.

With any evolution you get peaks and valleys which tend to move higher rather than lower.

That doesn't mean The Baha Men surpassed The Beatles though.

Let me use an example of a band that was mentioned heavily in my college class since the instructor loved punk rock.

The Ramones.
Influential. Important. Groundbreaking. Historical.

In terms of the product they produce though, Green Day is better. Green Day had advantages in time and influence but Green Day produces higher quality music.

Just like a Model T is more important than a hot hatch, you'd rather be driving the hot hatch when it is snowing.
