It's kind of looking like the debate we have around here about some not being able to use the N-word or other ethnic/religious slurs in polite (or even mixed) company. Is it just because (the generic) YOU have been told not to that makes it so seductive? I really don't get it.
I don't think they are mocking it as a joke as much as they are mocking it as a statement that they won't back down from violent religious nutjobs who seek to not only destroy them but also institute things that move back society about 1,000 years.

Crap like this is what I'm talking about.

But it's been proven that they will back down. It's been proven that at this point they (Europeans) are powerless/unwilling to fight. The ridiculousness & childishness of mocking Muhammad being a last figurative line in the sand is obvious.

It's also been proven that the French/English/Belgians/Dutch/etc. have brought much of this madness upon themselves with their own colonial histories in that part of the world. "They" wanted to keep the Middle Eastern/African society back 1000 years. "They" conspired, enslaved and wanted to monopolize the fruits of that part of the world and maintain a very un-Christian & monstrous way of life there for the better part of the last 500 years.

Now that they are effectively impotent to stop what passes for progress in that part of the world & are being economically made irrelevant as a result, the best they can do is bad satire & foolish mockery?

I think the bold part covers the majority of it.

From a non Eurocentric perspective, this is much less true than you realize. The latter much more than the former in my opinion.

And sadly they proved the hell out of it.

But did anyone really question the unhinged nature of a growing segment of this group?

Up until the last half of the 20th century, we were one of the few examples of a country that successfully fought its way out from under European Colonialism.

Take a look at the population demographics in Europe.

They will learn to live on others terms in the very near future, like it or not.

Just like with our own shifting demographics, some will have to learn here as well.

Seacrest above is right.

RR I do not see your larger point. You make your points but do not see that all other religions do not kill people or blow up things for jokes about their faiths/deities? Is some crazy ass Christian ok to go shoot Bernsie for all the shit he says? You are blaming the victims and that is not you usually.

I'm not defending them.

I'm questioning the "intelligence" of a group of people that find it wise to appeal to the worst in others thru their "freedom" of speech. And then being surprised when the guys from that group do exactly what they baited them onto doing.

I was addressing Regular Reader, who is aligning himself with that gutter faith.

While talking shit about Islam certainly belies any sense of self-preservation in our enlightened Western world, I don't think it makes one unintelligent to point out what a horrible belief system it is. And I don't think anyone's surprised at all.

I'm hoping the "Europeans" see where that story ends (with many people headless etc.) and think better of it.

There is still time. I'm hoping our friends across the pond think of something better to do than leading themselves gleefully into the slaughterhouse.

It isn't like there aren't a plethora of places that one can point to and say, "Hey, maybe that isn't what we want to condemn ourselves to?"

For some reason in Europe they are more PC or I'm ok you're ok than here. They have parts of their countries segregated and doing Sharia law rather than French for one example's law. It really has some open border / immigration issues and things are getting tense.

That is what they pretend but it has never really been that way.

That was always the ironic thing about how the perception used to be that America was more intolerant. Most European countries treat immigrants much worse than we do and they always have.

By childishly mocking the main "Prophet" of one of the world's main religions, exactly where is the intelligent discourse pointing out what a horrible belief system it is?

I don't know Islam and don't really care to. I don't know how you have me aligning myself with that faith, or the gutter trash committing murders in the name of ANY religion. I'm something of a non-practicing Catholic who would much rather see the commonalities in all of us rather than slavishly defending/attacking any element of another persons faith/religion. I'd prefer to continue to ask the question as to the benefit of satirizing another's religion in an infantile way.

The intelligent discourse is more about getting the rest of the world to realize what is being faced here. It's a shame our country didn't handle things better or it would be even easier.

To clarify....

This latest attack wasn't due to someone drawing an image of the Prophet Mohammed.

This latest attack (12 dead in Paris) was due to the cartoonist posting a picture of the leader of ISIS.

I guess that's all it takes these days.

Ah, how I long for the days of crucifixes placed in jars of urine!

Not exactly on topic, but close enough. I got this email on 5/9/10. The subject of the email was "going beyond disrespect". Here is the body of the email:

Going beyond disrespect
|
| The movie " Corpus Christi " is due to be released this June to August. A disgusting film set to appear in America later this year depicts Jesus and his disciples as homosexuals! As a play, this has already been in theatres for a while. It's called " Corpus Christi " which means "The Body of Christ". It's revolting mockery of our Lord. But we can make a difference. That's why I am sending this e-mail to you. If you do send this around, we just might be able to prevent this film from showing in America . Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. Where do we stand as Christians? At the risk of a bit of inconvenience, I'm forwarding this to all I think would appreciate it, too. Please help us prevent such offenses against our Lord. There is no petition to sign, no time limit, or minimum number of people to send this to.. It will take you less than 2 minutes! If you are not interested and do not have the 2 minutes it will take to do this, please don't complain when God does not have time for you because He is far busier than we are. Hey, it's worth a shot! Apparently, some regions in Europe have already banned the film. All we need is a lot of prayer and a lot of e-mails.

JUST GET THE WORD OUT

It's okay to mock Mohammad, but don't mock Jesus. Granted, I don't think anybody who sent that email wants to shoot 12 people, but it's funny to see what happens when the shoe is on the other foot.

While that may be the most recent turn, the French police were noted to have been actively (?) providing protection to their offices because of their prior history of satirizing Muhammad in cartoons. All I know is that if I'm actively discussing a terrorist group of unhinged wingnuts, I'm not using petty & lowest common denominator methods.

If they then went out and executed the film creators this would be a good example.

When this is all over, which is not going to be for a while, Trump will be re-elected President.
