Most around here seem to believe that he is a huge part of the Bears problems and he needs to be gone or at least kept far away from the football side of things.

What are the examples of things that have brought people to this conclusion?

He hired Phil Emery who gave us Marc Trestman.

I think folks want to see a John McDonough type executive take control and be in charge of everything. The past failures of GM's and coaches is partially attributed back to Phillips and what is perceived as a backwards way to run an organization.

He made a football decision yesterday for the love of God. The one GM canidate said he would get rid of Cutler so he hired the other guy. That's a football decision.

Also, I think I read this right as I did not hear the presser. But Ryan Pace said Ted will be in the room when he's interviewing coaches. Is that right? If so, why? That means he's involved in the football operation. Because there is no reason for him to be in the room if the GM has complete say in who the head coach will be.

John McDonough had the good fortune to walk into the two biggest no brainers in the history of sports.

1-Stay out of Harry Caray's way.

2- Follow Bill and Peter Wirtz and keep quiet when Rocky hires one the greatest hockey minds in history.

Snapper gave an example this morning. When titanium (lighter) faceguards were becoming popular the Bears purchased 7. He noted they were kind of expensive. Mannelly and Spiegel hinted that Ted likes to concern himself and require his approval for expenditures.

I assume this is where full control of "football operations" becomes grey.

Now there's a great idea. George should dip into his 3 years of contacts and find that football guy. And then that's who the GM "reports" to.

No one as obvious as Scotty Bowman exists on the NFL level.

Or how about what the Patriots did. They were playing the Chargers and practiced all week in San Diego. The Bears never do that. That cost a lot of money You have to put up 53 players and probably another 30 coaches and other staff members for 6 days. You have to rent a facility to practice. Food, transportation, hookers and other expenses. That all adds up.

Could this GM make that call? Or does he have to run it by Teddy?

They dumped Denis Savard a few games into a season. That had to be a very difficult move. It shows that he instilled accountability and was willing to go against the fan interest in a Hawks legend. This type of stuff never would have happened before with the Hawks. Nor would it happen with the Bears. This is just one item of many made by the Hawks in that culture change.

Jimmy Johnson? He's not leaving TV but it's worth a call.

Bill Parcells? There's an Acorsi guy. I'd feel a lot better with him in charge than Ted.

Bowman has had a hand in something like 14 Cups.

And didn't Parcells last two stops go pretty poorly?

His biggest professional accomplishment is developing the smallest stadium in the NFL in a market with possibly the biggest fanbase. The stadium is devoid of any architectural significance and the financials are generally considered a poor deal for the team.

Oh, and while we are on it, he has been heavily involved in the business end of the team for the better part of two decades. Forbes recently analyzed the Bears leadership and estimated the team was undervalued by almost ONE BILLION DOLLARS exclusively due to its poor direction.

I should not know the name of Ted Phillips.

I should have said that the NFL has no single person near the equivalent of Bowman.

And neither does the NBA or MLB. That doesn't mean you don't look for a replacement for Phillips.

But I guess Parcells couldn't have sealed the deal on the second smallest seating capacity stadium in the NFL, so he's got that going for him.

and these are old numbers that FORBES was using, the CONTENT the NFL Brings is unmatched, I would say that value missing is getting closer to the $2B area in untapped value.

Once again, could always be an amazingly smart move on Teddys part as one day, sooner rather than later a real Valuation is going to be needed to put on paper when shares transfer.

Damn good resume...all three teams he went to became serious contenders.

Buffalo Bills

Polian was General Manager in Buffalo from 1986 to 1993.[4] When Bill Polian was promoted to general manager of the Buffalo Bills on December 30, 1985, the Bills were suffering from back to back 2–14 seasons and fan interest was at an all-time low. Polian was originally hired as director of pro personnel for the Bills on August 2, 1984.[4] Polian was instrumental in the signing of Bruce Smith to his first NFL contract, after which he was promoted to GM in 1985.[5] Polian won the NFL Executive of the Year Award twice in 1988 and in 1991.[6] On February 4, 1993, after the Bills had appeared in, and lost, their 3rd straight Super Bowl, Polian was fired as general manager.

In 2012, Polian became the 28th inductee into the Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame.

Carolina Panthers

Polian was General Manager of the Panthers from 1994 to 1997.[7] He tried to create the quickest Super Bowl winner in history, and nearly did so, building a team that went to the NFC Championship Game in only its second year of existence. This feat led him to a promotion, becoming not just the GM, but the President of the Indianapolis Colts.
Indianapolis Colts

In 1997, Polian was hired as President and decided to build through the draft as the Colts would have the number 1 overall pick for 1998; the Colts picked Peyton Manning.

Polian was fired by owner Jim Irsay after the Colts finished with a 2–14 record in the 2011 season.[8]

Bill Polian has a nice resume.

It doesn't hold a candle, let alone a match even, to a man that has been the driving force behind 14 Stanley Cups.

Ballard: Ted, I will you answer to you and I will cut Cutler my first day on the job.

Phillips:  We'll get back to you. Thanks for coming in. Send Ryan in, please.

Pace: Golly gee, Mr Phillips. The Bears. This is sooooo awesome. Will I have final say on football decisions?

Phillips: Yeah. Of course. On all the small shit. The drafting, small time free agents, dealing with the criminal activity of our players, that's all you, buddy. But when it's big money, you gotta run it through me.

Pace: That sounds fair. I'll take the job. (Signs the contract)

Phillips: Great. We want to win next year. Best way to do that is keeping Cutler. So we're keeping Cutler. We're also not gonna hire a big time coach that's gonna want 7 million a year. Congratulations. See you tomorrow for the press conference.

Pace:

I'd have to think through this a bit more but I think a case can be made that, for a family that wishes to keep the team through a change in generations with this many hands in the cookie jar, they have incentive to keep the valuation of the team as low as possible.

The Forbes numbers are bullshit. If the L.A. Clippers can sell for 2 billion the Chicago Bears are worth at least 3 billion. Somebody would pay that. In fact I could see them going as high as 3.5 billion.
