i think one of the most criminally slept on LPs of all time, let alone that era, is 1994's "dare iz a darkside" by redman. the production is some straightup dirty funk stuff (expanding on the promise of "blow ya mind" off of his first LP) and redman was seriously a lyrical heavyweight back then. i'd go as far to say that during his prime (his proper LPs up until doc's da name, tho you could throw in malpractice too and just say until he kinda-retired-or-whatever, but theres a reason he didnt keep going after malpractice) he was the best punchline rapper in the history of rap. by now surely there's some underground MC from philadelphia or houston or something who can prolly take the title, but back then redman was indeed SOME SHIT.

saafir's light sleeper! del's no need for alarm! 2pacalypse/strictly-4! awww man i wanted to say chubb rock had just the two of us back then but thats 1991. faaaaahhhkkk,

yeah quite honestly in 92-94 you were still going from oldschool/fun rap into the gangsta/darker rap. it had yet to catch on and take over, altho like i said strictly 4 was out there and that was going to be a blueprint to take it further and then by 95-96 you had jay-z coming out and i forget what else.... shit was changed by the time pop hop started being all about puffy and ma$e and shit.

yeah i personally thought "holy shit... what the fuck?!?!?!" when i heard dan talking about winning the optics of the press conference with the andy pace deal. you'd probably know if he's used that term before, but i had never heard it and i couldn't help but wonder if 1) dan heard some REALLY. Don't know the origin of Dan's use, but he's said "optics" a ton. Usually it's in reference to press conferences. You know, "winning" them, because somehow that gets you closer to a championship?

"Optics" is DC political speak. I always hear it on Washington Week.

I believe "optics" as a synonym for "appearance," like so many crimes against the English language, originates in the Washington D.C. bourgeoisie. It's not enough to say something "looks bad," so you have to earn your salary and say it "has bad optics," even though you're changing from "to look" as a state-of-being verb to "to look" as an action verb and thus making no sense. It's like "feel badly" went to grad school.

I was just a kid but seems like it stopped became purely commercial around the time when Puffdaddy did that Sting cover.

This was a better collaboration:

Or sportscasters who say "differential" when they mean difference. I stole that one from George Carlin.

I gave up the war on "differential" (there are bigger fish to fry in Bad Sports English), but will continue to fight passionately against "optics" and "feel badly." You don't say your soup tastes badly!

I got nothin' but love for Dan, but c'mon man...don't be hatin' on the 90's! Redman, Nas, Pete Rock, ATCQ, Heltah Skeltah..tons of game-changing hip hop from the 90's. I recommend that everyone here do themselves a HUGE favor and read "Mo Meta' Blues" by my guy Questlove if you want to go deep into the movement.

To me the Golden Age of hip hop was 88-94. That was hip hop at its finest. It was uninhibited and far less corporate. Late 80's there was P.E., EPMD, EricB. and Rakim, Gangstarr, Boogie Down Productions and in the nineties C.L., Brand Nubians, Wu, Tribe, Keith Murray, Nas, etc. Guys took more chances and because rap was not really played on the radio the commercial aspect was negated. You really had to be into it to know about it. I actually just saw Rakim at the Arie Crown about 4 weeks ago the dude can still spit it. He pissed everyone off because he was an hr. Late. Once he got on he took you back to when hip hop was hip hop.

DAN HAS SPOKEN!

STOP WORRYING ABOUT JAY CUTLER. DON'T BE SO SMALLMINDED WHEN THINKING ABOUT THE BEARS! THEY GOT A NEW GENERAL. MANAGER. AND HE'S GOING TO HIRE A NEW COACH AND A NEW STAFF AND THAT'S MUCH BIGGER THAN JAY CUTLER!!

STOP. WORRYING. ABOUT. JAY. CUTLER. IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER!

Dan's Straw-Man/Idiot/Mensch wrote:
BUT THEY STILL GOT TED PHILLIPS!!!!

TED PHILLIPS DOES NOT MATTER! HE'S NOT IN CHARGE OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS! THEY'RE BRINGING IN A. NEW. GENERAL. MANAGER.

---

you know, after the pace hire b&b was a hard listen because the people on here who have pointed out that dan's lips are firmly planted on the rectum of bears ownership so he can propagate the company line/narrative are SPOT ON. i called it #synergy when the score/CBS signed that deal with the bears to have the score/CBS be the official bears home of year-round-chicago-bears-weekly/[whatever] respectively, as in that there needs to be #synergy between the team itself and its media partners who are now more obligated than ever to tote the company line and do their damnedest to get the entire fanbase in lockstep with them.

people who were idiots (george mccaskey) or who just had to go (ted phillips) have now been praised for their QUICK-N-DECISIVE BOLD LEADERSHIP and Ted Phillips, who's in the same exact position he was before the emery/trestman exodus, is now given a 100% pass for everything because HE DOESNT MATTER. HE'S OUT OF THE PICTURE.

i swear someone from the bears got a hold of dan and said "hey you need to get everyone to stop bagging on ted. tell them that emery was in 100% control of the football operation and in fact ted/george/mgmt SHOULD HAVE meddled with emery+pals and because they didn't that's why we're in such a horrible place.

near the end of the season b&b seemed like they wanted to lead the charge to get everyone out the door and blow up the whole operation because at this point (grouping angelo in with emery and starting to question whether their boss/es were culpable for hiring both of these guys who did their parts in destroying the bears to the tune of some-draft-stat-saying-they're-raiders-bad) but then #synergy kicked in (i heard #synergy mentioned during the pace presser too!) and now it's like 1984-style relationship with eastasia in terms of ted phillips: TED PHILLIPS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL OPERATIONS. TED PHILLIPS NEVER HAD ANYTHNG TO DO WITH FOOTBALL OPERATIONS. even tho that whole "football operations" part of "president of football operations" might have had you scratching your head, welp that's only because you're a goddamned idiot and you need to listen to bernstein more because he'll set you straight and tell you what's what aka WHAT IT IS and then you'll be allowed to have viable thoughts/comments, assuming that they're only there to let dan know how right he is.

yeah TLDR i spose, but man during the whole andy pace rollout and consequent radio equivalent of "winning the optics" with the post-presser-analysis i just couldn't help but think of #synergy and realize that beerstain is totally a 100% mouthpiece for the organization because holy shit i swear to god there was the whole golden age of GMs thing aka REALLY. SMART. PEOPLE. lauding the bears' "football hipster" tendencies to blaze their own trail (....to 5-11) back when trestman got hired and emery was the toast of the town for bringing in brandon marshall for a song and the guy gave you ~1500yds 11TD during a 10-6 season that makes the playoffs in something like 85%+ of other seasons.

now it never happened and phil is an idiot for re/signing marshall and especially for bringing trestman in, dan "doesnt remember" what this whole golden age of GMs thing you're talking about is, and REALLY. SMART. PEOPLE. has been moved over to theo and pals over @ the cubs where i'm sure it will be claimed that REALLY. SMART. PEOPLE. was ALWAYS about ONLY the cubs and they were never sold on trestman because they knew he was weird from day 1. marc trestman was always dr. death just like we ALWAYS were at war with eurasia! duh! listen to the show more closely so you don't sound like an idiot misquoting dan.

It's almost as if the Bears' communications director let the Score go after Trestman and Emery after deciding both would be gone and then had them get back on message -- though they were "on message" all along.

Stop worrying about Cutler?

3 players are taking up a chunk of the cap. Cutler is one of them. And he sucks.

I would say that's something to worry about.

He said caller was right about the Baltimore guy saying Ted Phillips was an issue. Dan went around and said he didn't say it but reporter inferred. Then threw Mannely at him about past and Phillips nixing computers and expensive face masks. Dan said that was ten years ago it is different now.

Ted Phillips doesn't do things Ted Phillips did. Agree with me and you'll look smart.

Dan-"Ted Phillips is out of the picture" Did he not hear Ted tell the media that the new GM will be reporting to him?

Does Dan realize how foolish this stance makes him sound? And of course his partner just agrees. This is almost as ridiculous as his "Golden Age of GM's" monologue.

Joe from Chicago Heights was correct in saying DeCosta said he would not report to Phillips. bernstein was wrong again. And not just wrong, but indignant toward the caller who was right.

With Dan talking to his "guy" tonight or tomorrow, what's the chances of tomorrow's show starting with "the Bear's are all in on Fox".

Nah, I'd go more with "why is there this insistence on hiring a coach with experience just for the sake of hiring a coach with experience? Get the best guy. Also, Ted isn't involved on the football side."

Just repeating what someone else claimed that isn't true.

According to my guy, your source(s), Terry, and what was said during transition it would be 100%.

Although I'm not sure in what order.
