How come nobody's talking about Jimmie Foxx?

How come nobody's talking about how Phillips should not be involved with football decisions?

Do you think Jimmy Butler's great season will give the Bulls momentum into the playoffs?

it's not so much the "how ya doin" but the pause after it, followed by the awkward "good" answer that always ensues. i think that's why producers tell you not to ask that, because it just throws everything off from the getgo.

The problem isn't the caller being polite. It's the rude response of the hosts.

I don't find formalities entertaining, its better when people just get to the point. That being said I understand why people do it. And, even a mediocre radio hosts knows how to brush past it; but yes, Dan's assholery bogs down the flow of the show.

Is John Fox such a legend that the Bears should just offer him the job with no interview? I don't get it.

Heard a tiny bit of LoHo tonight, and a couple callers gave him the "how ya doin'" (couldn't tell if genuine or trying to get a reaction), and the way Laurence said "fine" conveyed a Bernstein-like annoyance but also stopped short of "I'm a dick."

I don't understand the annoyance. It is just a way to begin a conversation. I'm sure Berns does it daily.

Everyone does it. It's called society. To not do it is downright odd as illustrated by Curious Hair in a post above. What's really strange is those who question the sincerity with which "How ya doin'?" is asked. Of course, it's not sincere. Almost nobody really gives a shit how you are. It's just the oil with which we lubricate communication. I wouldn't mind if dan bernstein had a terminal condition, but if I were meeting him I would still say something like, "Hi, how are you?" And it doesn't demand a real answer either. Once in awhile you'll meet someone- usually an old guy- who actually replies with his maladies. There is only one appropriate answer to "How are you?" and that is "Fine, and how about you?"

I don't. And if we can all agree it's insincere in the first place THEN WHY ASK THE QUESTION TO BEGIN WITH? You are proving my point entirely. All you sheep who feel compelled to follow some conversational script, go right ahead. But it's annoying as hell, probably to more people than you think. I haven't been the only one in this thread who has said it's annoying.

It's not really a question. Is that hard to understand?

And of course you're a sheep. I'm guessing that you're going to be wearing the same clothes, eating the same lunch, and posting on the same damn message board as all the other sheep, too. But by all means, keep enjoying the fantasy that you're a unique little snowflake.

If the parody by Noisewater earlier in the thread doesn't show you how ridiculous your position is, I'm certain I won't be able to.

I don't care if it's a real question, a fake question, oil to lube the conversation or whatever you called it..... It's a stupid, unnecessary, contrived convention. Annoying. And I don't really give a shit how ridiculous anyone thinks my stance on it is. So keep doing what you do, Chief.

The whole world operates on contrived convention. Chief. You sound like a guy who thinks it's you vs. the world and you actually believe you're winning.

If a cute girl who you don't know says "good morning" to you on the elevator on your way up to separate floors of your building in the morning, what do you do?

the question more is whether it's good radio. I don't necessarily want to hear two people have a 'conventional' conversation, especially when clearly Berns doesn't view the caller as his peer.

I've listened to a lot of talk radio. The vast majority of callers to any show begin with some normal pleasantry and the only time I ever notice it is when listening to B&b because of dan's sighs and groans and snarling.

Also, I've made a pretty good living through cold calling. In fact, I've written many scripts. Have any of you ever received a cold call wherein the caller immediately tells you what he "needs" without so much as saying hello?

I can't imagine a call going like this:

Secretary: Good morning, thank you for calling the office of Dr. Kenneth Noisewater, Genius. How may I help you?

Cold Caller: I need to speak to the person who handles your AT&T account.

Secretary: Oh, that would be Dr. Noisewater himself. Let me patch you right through to him!

Very occasionally, it happens. And I guess that's why these goofs use that script. Without getting into nuts and bolts and jargon like "set rates", I can tell you that the reason they dispense with any niceties is because at its heart cold calling is a pure numbers game. If a caller doesn't waste time with "Hi, how are you" he can maybe make 170 dials per day as opposed to 140. In a room with 30 callers, that's 900 dials per day.

But there is the way the company on whose behalf you are calling is being represented. And there is the quality of the call to consider. I guarantee my set rate is substantially higher than the guys who just go right in to what they "need". In fact, enough higher that I don't need to beat the shit out of my guys to pound out 30 extra calls per day. And that's why I work for quality clients. My callers say "Good Morning" like human beings rather than demanding things like fucking savages.

Then they shouldn't take the calls at all. Just let bernstein pontificate and Terry say "uh huh".

Mully and Hanley have the same frustration with callers who greet. There's other shows that get frustrated with it too, I've heard it on national shows.

I used to work with a jerk who didn't speak, or at least didn't speak to me. I also have in-laws who don't start phone calls with any pleasantries. The problem with abstaining from social pleasantries like "hello" is that you not only sound like ignorant savages but you also put yourself at a conversational disadvantage once someone knows how you interact.

For the jerk at work it meant becoming ignored by me on site and then when information had to be conveyed it was done in a very brusque, business tone I have information that you need, here it is, don't ask me any questions, you prick.

My family has come to know that "verbal judo" puts people who can't extend a pleasantry at a disadvantage, because you can't say "hello", I just won't come out and say "what do you want?" Unlke a call in radio show, where calls are being solicited, you picked up a phone and are interrupting me without any social civility. I can now take the conversation wherever I want.

What are you doing?

Working something very intricate that needs concentration masturbating

I need you to....

Now I've got control. I can simply say "I'm busy", or extract an inflated price for what you want. Call it the surchage for a lack of civility. Those that use pleasantries think I'm a sweatheart, those that don't grouse that I play favorites. Well, I do.

Give Beerstain a week without pleasantries and the show's tone would become crash-wreck entertaining. He needs to be a peenus but if every caller just got right to it he would find himself taking less calls as he would eventually lose one more aspect of interaction he can't control. Maybe when I take my next staycation I'll call in daily and start without the pleasantries but "you're wrong, again." He'll of course ask "how?" and then I'll have conversational control.

Must be real tough for them to have to be put through such torture for the dozen or so calls they take everyday. How do they do it?

they just need to go to Score hello every day. Dan knowing what the caller is calling about is part of the issue.

My BIL just called me, he rarely extends pleasantries. Despite my agreement to help him I just changed everything I had previously agreed upon just to be a dick.

I'm moving up our appointment time 30 minutes.

But I wasn't planning to be ready.

What do you have to do that is more important?

I have to...

You're more important to me right now but I have something else to do right after that is going to be a giant pain in the ass.

Ok, I'll meet you early.

In 23 years of the Score, the opening pleasantry of "How ya doin?" hasn't gone away...it's not.

Each host needs to simply look at it as the cost of doing business and shut the fuck up.

I work on a daily basis with offshore teams in a certain country. There's nothing I hate more than the canned statements "Warm Regards" and "gentile reminder". I tolerate ate and focus on the work.

What JORR said...if they can't handle a harmless "How ya doin", which if you look at it's spirit and intent, is nothing more than nervous energy, they should stop taking calls all together...or here's a concept...go find a real job and see how they like that.
