Down to Redskins and Bears apparently according to Tribune article.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/fo ... story.html

This would be a catch, indeed.

Fangio, 56, coordinated the 49ers' defense for the last four seasons. That unit ranked in the NFL’s top five in total defense each year, despite extensive personnel issues due to injury and disciplinary reasons in 2014. His background is in the 3-4 front with the Ravens and 49ers.

He'd be a good get. I know the Bears need to completely revamp the defense anyway but we would have
very few current players that could play in the 3-4. We need some big wide bodies up front and a
much more athletic linebacking corps I would think. I'd say go for it, we need somebody solid in there.

Bostic and Jones not athletic enough for you?

The Fox hire I ok by me.

The real difference I have seen over past regime changes is the speed in hiring coordinators and the quality of the candidates.

That was said about Trestman on here too.

No one thought the quality of coordinator hires for Trestman was good.

They showed me a few things and yes they are athletic but a 3-4 generally indicates a
4 linebacker set. We are short a couple and they all need to be great tacklers in that
configuration with one guy maybe able to come as an edge rusher ( McClellin  )

Was it?

I still believe Kroemer was a good hire but Tucker was never a very good candidate. He had experience but it was bad experience

Kroemer was a guy ascending to his position with an offense under the control of Payton.

Fangio would be a great get for the Bears. The Bears would then become a 3-4, 2 gap defensive team.

Vic Fangio 3-4 (4-3 Under)

Defensive Lineman

Although, Fangio uses 3-4 personnel, his defensive alignment a large percentage of the time is the 4-3 Under. Now what does that mean exactly? 3-4's are traditionally run with a nose tackle directly over the center (0-tech) with two defensive ends sitting in the outside shoulders of the tackles in 5-tech.

The 4-3 under works with a nose tackle over the 1-tech spot. One of the defensive ends playing 5-tech, and the other defensive end lining up in the 3-tech. The phrase "under" means that the one of the DE's is lining up directly over the weak-side guard. The benefit of the 4-3 under for the Redskins is that it is also uses the same 1-gap assignment for the defensive lineman just like the benefits of Wade Phillips' 3-4 system.

Reports say that the Redskins are the favorite to get Fangio. I would be very happy with Jim Schwartz if we miss on Vic. Schwartz is a great defensive coach.

Based on what? As the article states, Chicago would be a more stable place for Fangio to go. Redskins change coaches every 2 years.

And he would be working for a better HC in Fox than Jay Gruden.

I agree on all points. I cant imagine anyone preferring the Redskins over the Bears.

I'd expect Vig Fangio and Ed Donatell to agree to join the Skins coaching staff by Tues AM. Would be very surprised if they did not

Nice move by the Redskins. They're having a real nice offseason. Very surprising.

Former Raiders HC Dennis Allen is re-joining Saints in a senior defensive role, not heading to Chicago. Allen will work with NO DC Rob Ryan.

Vic Fangio has turned down the Washington Redskins and is the #Bears new Defensive Coordinator.
