He's gonna help the Cubs win a game to make the playoffs this year just like Walter helped the Bears block that kick.

This really bums me out.

Ernie used to hit on my wife at that 9-hole course downtown on a regular basis. But, hey, he's Mr. Cub, what could I say?

"let's play two" calling for the manage a trois?

all/any joking aside, man, condolences going out to ernie's family and all of cub nation. i always felt kinda sad that the guy had to rock his "mr. cub ernie banks 512HR" hat and all that.... i mean yeah he oversaw a lot of bad cubs baseball, but it wasn't his fault as the guy was a no-doubt hall of famer for doing what he did back in the day.

i wonder if the hearse is going to continue the precedent where it does a lap around wrigley field? ok well i DID say all joking aside, so yeah... RIP dude.

I met him on the golf course in Channahon. He had a Mr Cub hat, Mr Cub shirt and Mr Cub golf bag. He liked being Mr Cub.

He ever bang your wife? I'd think as a Cubs fan you'd be cool with that. That's quite a story to tell at parties.

Then I'm thinking, maybe it was Ronnie Woo Woo hitting on your wife and you just thought it was Ernie. Cuz they look alike.

As a kid who grew up in the 1960's mimicking Ernie's batting stance in the backyard playing wiffle ball... right elbow, arm & wrist, this saddens me greatly. :(

Ernie Banks debuted on 9/17/53. Cubs should make 9/17 Ernie Banks Day and play an annual home doubleheader.

Not sure whether you're doing some B&B "make fun of people who like things" thing, but that really is a good idea.

I didn't start following Cubs baseball until 1967. Ernie still had a little pop left but not the same great ballplayer he was when he came up of course. He still played on some very good Cub teams 67-71.

I loved the guy and will miss him. Rest In Peace!

well, you can understand that media proliferation back in his day wasn't quite what it was now.... and while baseball cards were a thing back then, it's not like he had an instagram account with 2000+ pictures of himself on there to self-promote.... so as he got older and prolly looked a little different as an old/er man he had to let you know just who he was, lest people be like "hey that guy looks kinda familiar" and etc etc.

man can you imagine how pimpin a joe dimaggio instagram account coulda been? or ted williams? or hell how about shawn kemp, who could have made t-shirts for the ladies saying "I FUCKED SHAWN KEMP AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS SEMI-LEGITIMATE CHILD"

and if you havent been keeping an eye on instagram lately, good god man, it continues to bring out nothing but the best in humanity >>>

Image

c'est la vie, and of course RIP. can't knock the guy for the self promotion as perhaps he was a little bit ahead of his time, and i recon it was always a little bit sad that he evidently wasnt quite recognized as being ernie banks enough to warrant making the mr. cub hat/shirt/etc. definite "smoke 'em if you got 'em" territory and hopefully he was able to cash in on a few free meals for his hat-advertised status because lord knows he wasn't walking away from the game worth the back-then-equivalent of ~150-250mil or whatever a HOF player like him makes nowadays.

edit: now that i look at that picture again i think that's actually tinder, because nothing says "i wanna nail this chick" quite like "she fucked odell beckjam jr! get on her level, Caller Bobs!"

No I like it just fine ... it plays to everything/everyone - meatball fans, old fans, new fans, long time fans, people who love tradition, and it monetizes a game on a date where games, more often than not, don't otherwise mean shit to a tree (though one hopes that trend ends for some time).

(edit - that even might read as sardonic when it shouldn't ... I do like the idea just fine ... wouldn't die if it didn't happen but my preference would be it become an annual thing, if not just this year)
