SPIEGEL: Guys, it was a saahhd weekend, as Ernie Banks passed away. Your thoughts, boys?

DAN: Talking to my Cubs guy, (sigh)...I...I have to be careful how I word this. (sigh) It's not that Theo and Jed and Tom Ricketts are happy Ernie Banks died, but...there's a sense of...I want to say, almost a sense of relief that the organization can move on from one of its...its trappings, that there was this man walking around the park with "Mr. Cub" on his hat, and it's just that...all these things add up to this atavistic mentality that you can't change Wrigley Field because it's timeless. Well, people aren't timeless, as we're finding out, and so now with the renovations, it'll be easier to...to make that break, I guess is how you could say it. I know they felt the same way when Ron Santo died, and of course, the team is going to be publicly maudlin about what a great player he was -- and he was, the numbers bear that out, for the most part -- but...(sigh) in a lot of ways it's one fewer...Cubs thing to have to explain away all the time as they're trying to run a damn business.

SPIEGEL: Wow, you really still are a jackass!

EVERYONE: hahahahahaha!

TERRY: I mean, look, I watched Ernie Banks, and, ah, I, I talked about it with my guy, and he said the same thing, really, that, I mean, great player, one of the best who ever lived, but the fact that, and I mean, the fact that you had this guy walking around with Mr. Cub on his hat, I mean, this was a great player, and now he's like a cross between Ronnie Woo Woo and Andy the Clown! And, uh, I mean, guys, really, when you think about it, the Ernie Banks that we knew and loved, that Ernie Banks died years ago, and really, when you get down to it, it's another guy from that '69 team that never won anything! They never won anything!

this site is the release valve for all the trash we feel towards our shows that then allows us to still listen without suffering cognitive dissonance.

Felt the exact same way when I heard it this morning. In their defense, I was expecting it to be followed by one of their horrible ads, but it was a CBS Sports Minute of Boomer waxing nostalgic about Ernie.

that was scary good.

There will probably be reference to creepy Cardinal fans when the Banks statue is in Daley Plaza this week.

That is as close to perfect as it gets. Well done.

I wonder if they'll make fun of the idiots who feel sad for someone they didn't even know? And to leave flowers...my God, man! Why do you care?!?!

Now that the Cubs are on WBBM, I think you may see a softer & gentler Bernsie over this subject.

Wow, that was perfect. For a second I thought I lost track of what time it was and this actually happened.

I will forever stop bashing the Score King if he reads his lines from this thread word for word and blows everyone's mind.

This is right up there with Leery Bingo. The use of the word "maudlin" was the clincher. Nicely done.

I really hope there are some teddy bears outside the ernie statue. This could be a tough one for Dan.

Is anybody listening to Hub on with Spiegs and Mannelly right now? If so, Hub just claimed to do 900-1000 push ups a day?

WTF?! No way dude is doing 10 sets of 100 full push-ups, must just be bouncing up and down...
