Saw this over the weekend. Great movie, but more impressive as a production than as a story. But, that said, the story holds its own as well when you consider that its nearly 3 hours long, nothing happens and yet my interest in the film never waned.


But, as a production this is truly one of the most amazing films ever made. To do this over 12 years before getting any payoff is just incredible. The number of people that had to commit to that and pull it off, just wow.

That said, imagine how much your life has sucked for the past 12 years if you're that kid. "Hey kid, you've been talking about this stupid movie you're in since 1st grade, yet there's never a fucking movie. I bet you're not even in a movie!" Yea, I could see that getting quite annoying after over a decade.

And how about some of these actors who had one scene 10 years ago and then get brought back for a season a decade later. Crazy. Surprised they were able to get a couple name actors like Hawke and Arquette to commit to such a project.

because it's richard linklater. he uses ethan hawke all the time. and the kid just got the biggest comeuppance if he had to listen to naysayers for 10 years. cus not only did they complete it, but it's an oscar darling already.

i'm going to try and check it out this week, trying to make some time for it.

I thought it was great. Some really good acting and it was amazing to see the kids and adults age right in
front of you.

Imitation Game and a certain movie that gets people riled up were much better.

I thought it was overly long and not all that interesting beyond the gimmick. Also, I got distracted by the kid's acting later in the movie as he got older.

I found his character pretty boring at best and unlikeable at worst.

This film should most likely win Best Picture. I think it has the best chance...and it'd be worthy.

It's very typical of Linklater films. It's not about big moments or anything, it's a process. It's about the details, and if you pay attention, you'll see what unfolds. It's very natural and the actors are all exceptional. I like that neither maternal nor paternal influence defines either of the kids and how they basically become exactly like every kid you've ever met. There's something very unique about how ordinary everyone is and how ordinary the film unfolds. He takes cliches they flow so easily that they don't come off as cliche. There's nothing preachy or moral about the story. It's literally like looking into a time capsule of a family (albeit broken family) and their life.

A film that will be appreciate more with time. But even in its own, extremely worthwhile.

If your plan is to make an ordinary movie about the details of a person's life, then why bother to make it fiction?

Just do a documentary on the life of an "ordinary" kid and see how it unfolds. It would be far more compelling because the stakes are real, even if the story is fairly mundane.

you can manipulate details if it's fiction. even though the events are not that earth shattering giving the "ordinary" feel, it still spans many things that happen in a person's life, and a family's life. you can't really know you'll simulate that by just "documenting" someone's life.

I appreciate the film making and the cinematographer but I was constantly looking at the clock wondering how much longer was left.

So couldn't they just use different actors? This movie sounds like all gimmick.

so there are some documentaries that do the spanning life thing. there's a series called "seven up" (up series) directed by michael apted that goes back to 1964 and follows 14 british youths every 7 years, up until now.

i had also forgot about "hoop dreams", which follows the lives of inner city kids becoming basketball players and their desires to go pro.

i think in those docs the idea is about social issues and classisms. this movie's more about general lifehood.
