Honestly, how do these guys go from crowning the Bulls as the Eastern Conference champion as recently as last month, to saying they won't even make the ECF?

That would be stupid. They are saying challenging players to get better is wrong. Another sign of the pussification of America.

And folks say the regular season doesn't matter....isn't it funny? Thibs can't win.

The strange thing about that Cowley segment was that Cowley said the Bulls have a history of closing the walls in on their coaches and that they're doing it to Thibodeau now. Bernstein agreed, and then basically said "so what?"

Trying to sound scientific?

In the sense that eugenics are science, yes.

Your chance of finding a coach equal to or better than Thibs is probably less than 10%.

if i wanted to win regular season games i'd hire thibs... but i would prefer treating the regular season for what it is... glorified exhibition games... and getting your team physically and mentally ready for the real season... the Playoffs. If he would adopt this approach things would be better. A team that has legit championship hopes should be able to coast in to a 4 seed or higher playing reduced minutes in the regular season with an eye towards having the team ready to go full on in April. Playing Pau Gasol 35 minutes a game right now is just dumb... there is no other way to explain this. Only a dumb coach would be playing his 34 year old key to title hopes this hard in regular season.

Why are your guys attacking a top 5 coach? Thibs would have another job in seconds.

edit. Missed the "r" in "your". I'd say it's due to being close to someone in the front office.

Well, they've had a bad month. So it's be normal to change your mind. But yes, 'those guys' in the past have said when things were going well that the regular season didn't matter.

I try to not ever acknowledge Cowley exists, but that is interesting because Cowley has all season painted himself (like any good clown would) as pro-Thibs.

so a coach with zero NBA finals appearances is top 5? Top 5 x's/o's probably... but that is only part of the job.... i could even say the less important part of being a coach

Bernstein promotes "the regular season doesn't matter" bullshit as a way of not having to watch the game. Its another example of lazy radio. Its his out and he uses it every time and I'm shocked that he hasn't been called on it before. Actually I'm not because they rarely talk to "real" NBA guys on his show. Only (1) No. 4 seed has ever won the NBA championship. THere has also only been (1) No. 6 seed that has won the championship. No (7) and (8) seeds have ever won. There has only been (7) No. 3 seeds that have won. (10) No. 2 seeds have won while (48) No. 1 seeds have won the championship. There has never been a No. (5) seed that has won. This notion that you can simply rest players during the regular season yet still win an NBA championship is pure and utter bullshit. The Spurs did it while maintaining a No. 1 seed status. Let's see if they can do it this yr as they hover around a 5 or 6 seed. Bernstein and others have promoted this as a way of excusing themselves from actually having to watch the games. The regular season does matter. There are a lot of reasons that it matters. It astounds me that he has been allowed to spew this bullshit without someone calling him on it.

Substitute a few proper names and account for technological advances and I'd bet the ranch that Norman Chad wrote this exact column some time between 1997 and 2005.

I don't think Thibs is a developer of talent. He is reluctant to play young players. That is my chief criticism of him. He also will err on the side of defense if given a choice. There are very few coaches that I would rather have than him however. I think one of the problems that he may be having with management is that he refuses to play the young players. Snell rarely has played under him. McDermott's was basically out of the rotation prior to his injury. Mirotic's minutes have been on the decline as of late. While this is happening you are receiving a steady dose of Hinrich and Gibson. He also has Etwaun Moore playing who is a ten contract guy. He is sitting the offensive minded guys in favor of veterans that are more defensive oriented. The Bull management's philosophy is not jiving with Thibs because in the last two yrs they have gone out and gotten players who are more offensive oriented. There are no Keith Bogans and Ronnie Brewer type pickups on this roster and I think Thibs is in disagreement about that.

Berns likes NBA basketball. Why wouldn't he enjoy watching regular season games? Doesn't make any sense.

He watches. He started using the regular season doesn't matter when the Bulls would beat the Lebron Heat in the regular season regularly but not in playoffs.

The regular season doesn't matter, but only high seeds win championships, but the high seeds aren't high seeds because they won games that don't matter, the high seeds are high seeds because they're good. Man alive, NBA navel-gazing is the worst.

But if you are a basketball fan, you enjoy watching basketball, regular season or playoff games. Sports are fun to watch. Winning a championship is just a bonus.

Regular season only matters when the Bulls lose to the Heat like they did this past Sunday. Then it is proff they dont have the star talent to will themselves to victory over a shitty team. When they beat Golden St despite of the dog shit performance by Rose and no Butler it does not matter.
