He's just marking his territory after Manfred tried to take his Really Smart People's shifts away. Maybe we'll shit on the rules of baseball in a hundred exciting ways by 2016.

EDIT: oh and why are you surprised he told you what he's doing yada yada yada

I'm against the change, but apparently this idea was responded to with overwhelming positivity by executives of other teams and baseball writers.

I don't like the idea as a whole.

Comparing it to other awful ideas of trying to increase scoring while improving pace of play, it's probably the best that's been floated.

I don't really need any changes because I don't hate baseball. But wouldn't it make more sense to simply limit the number of pitchers a team could carry to eight or nine?

Great idea JORR. Should have thought of it myself.

As much as I love baseball traditions, it is annoying at the slow pace of games. I would much prefer they do things like, the pitcher can only step off the mound once per at bat, and the batter may only leave the box once per at bat.

It is very tough to stick with a four hour regular season game. I love baseball, but it is a lot of time to commit to one game.

That has been floated. I generally like it. However, don't we already have the problem of over taxed pitchers?

For the most part, I do not mind the pace of a baseball game.
The one thing that really bothers me is the time it takes to insert a pitcher into the game to face just one batter.
Having to face a minimum of two batters sure changes the entire strategy, doesn't it?

Speeding the pace:
Back in the late sixties, one umpire (Chris Pelacudas??) hated Leo Durocher. He actually called automatic balls on some Cub pitchers because they held the ball too long (Ken Holtzman & /or Phil Reagan...I think). I'm not sure of all the details but I'm pretty sure this was a story back then.

I think pitch deliveries should be on the clock to speed the game up. I'm pretty sure there already is a rule on this that's not enforced.

And they should all be viciously murdered in the streets as an example ... along with the "baseball is slow" crowd.

Its a stupid idea. Especially for the NL.

How about a change where if you pinch hit for the pitcher, that player has to play at least one inning of defense?

The LH relief specialist will not be crazy about Theo's suggestion.

No.

No changes are required. If they want to use a pitching clock, okay. Not a big deal...they are just enforcing a rule that already exists.

No need to mess with rosters, pitching changes, or anything else.

Dennis...how many four hour regular season games are there per team?

I feel the same way BUT I wouldn't mind seeing the NL get the DH.

Right now the lack of hitting in baseball is evident. One more bat wouldn't hurt.

I do think that with the two leagues becoming homogenized and playing games against each other the rules need to be standardized. Whether that means implenting the DH in the NL or eliminating it in the AL doesn't really matter to me.

Overall I agree, but we're baseball guys.

I would like to see them improve upon the replay 'challenge' system, and speed up the game. Pitch clocks, limiting catcher trips to the mound, limiting batter timeouts, and calling the strike zone (as JOrr has suggestions, letters to knees) would all help in that regard.

I would like to see them run the bases in the opposite direction. More jobs for left-handed infielders.

just skip the #9 spot in the batting order and ditch the DH too.

That's more radical than the DH ever was.

As I've said before, I think if you just called the book strikezone a lot would change. Even though it's bigger than what the call now, I believe that it would force batters to go up looking to hit rather than looking to run a long count and would actually result in less strikeouts. Most fans aren't buying a ticket to watch guys try to walk.

while the strategy is absolutely the right strategy currently to try and draw walks, yes, the strike zone should move up to the numbers. Faster games, more swings, less runs scored...I like it.

I like watching a guy work the count haha

I'm not the target fan here though

I can't wait for this season. We may get to argue actual baseball instead of general management philosophy!
