Has anyone pointed out that the Score's slogan for last season's White Sox coverage was "We're All In This Together"?

I think they used that tagline to sell tickets on The Titanic as well.

No, really, they used this song by the Sam Roberts Band and ran promos about how Score hosts and the White Sox were "in this together." Maybe the song will jog people's memories. It's a good song, at any rate.

Oh look! viewtopic.php?f=33&t=87571

This is said quite a bit on this board, but that truly is perfect WYC material. (although that segment sucks and always has)

I think many people have missed the point on this issue. Dan and Terry were as right as could be to call out Beckman for his statements about the media's role in helping the football program. The media is not there to serve as cheerleader or marketing arm of the university. The job of the media is to report the facts in an objective and unbiased manner.

Now, while people may question the media's ability to get the "facts", the point is, the job of a journalist is to seek out the truth of a story, be it both positive or negative. There is a difference between what a reporter does and a commentator does. Those who have said Dan and Terry are hypocritical about their questioning Beckman, yet praise Epstein despite three losing seasons, are confusing the jobs of reporter and show host/commentator. Dan and Terry give opinions and their job on the radio is to take what they know and form opinions based on those opinions. They have the freedom to be "for" or "against" a particular issue because they are offering personal commentary on what they see. Columnists in newspapers are given this freedom as well.

Reporters do not have that luxury. Their job is to report the facts and to do so without opinion or bias. Their job is to ask questions in order to answer who, what, where, when, why, and how. Beckman asking the media to get on board is akin to a politician asking reporters to write on promoting that which puts their city or town in a good light only. That is not what they are to do. The media is a separate entity designed to serve as the "watchdog".

I believe Dan and Terry break negative way to often on things, especially on callers. I agree that when they smell blood they have no problem attacking. But, in this case they couldn't be more right. let the university's p.r. people handle getting the message out about the school. Beckman needs to win games, and what will help him is having good players and coaches around him.

Ah crap. I guess I posted this in the wrong section before:

My favorite part of the whole interview yesterday was when DAN attempted to to teach Beckman that what he was asking the media to do goes against everything that they are taught in journalism school.

Dan literally began that interview with "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?".
I'm a few credits shy of my journalism degree, but.......

Right and if that includes being hypocritical, I can point that out on a message board dedicated to their station.

We're all set!

The biggest problem is that what Beckman was asking them to do is how they are for Northwestern. The football team is approaching Illini levels and the basketball team is actually regressing from the Carmody era. However, they are mostly positive about both those programs and only really go negative when there is no other option.

No.
They can't have it both ways. Either you are "serious journalists" or you are "entertainers".

I probably said that wrong. Terry stopped being a journalist years ago.
Dan honestly believes he is so good at being a journalist that he feels compelled to educate others about that field.
Unless he doesn't feel like it. Then it's ok to embarrass himself.

Here's how Bernstein started out his column criticizing Fitzgerald's "bad optics" on his statements regarding the player's unionization battle.

Dan Bernstein wrote:
(CBS) — “Northwestern University combines innovative teaching and pioneering research in a highly collaborative environment. It provides students and faculty exceptional opportunities for intellectual, personal and professional growth.”

That’s the very first information available under “Northwestern Facts” on its website, and I believe it all to be true.

I have tremendous respect for NU as a proud institution of higher learning. Several family members have left that campus proudly as graduates, JDs or MBAs, I have friends both professional and personal working in some capacity there right now, and countless more connected in some way. As a truly elite, private school, Northwestern is the class of its conference by a wide margin.

I hold them to a higher standard when it comes to important issues, and I remain hopeful that their position as ground zero for the looming evolution of collegiate athletics can be viewed by their leaders not as a threat, but a historic chance to live up to their well-earned standing.

This is time for the kind of innovation and pioneering of which they speak.

Do you think dan and Terry are unbiased when it comes to the University of Illinois?

I don't think Terry really gives a shit, but enjoys making sport of a simpleton like Beckman, as anyone would. Dan definitely has a distaste for "anything south of I-80," though Terry had to remind Dan that technically he lived south of I-80. (We need to draw a clearer line for where Downstate starts.)

The strange thing is that right now, Illinois is buying time on WSCR but Northwestern isn't doing any business with them. By rights, they should be in the tank for U of I and ripping Northwestern.

Yes, this has to change. Because the south suburbs of the 80's have moved south west

Oak Lawn and Orland people now live in New Lenox and Homer Glen. Gonna need to move the line. I suggest Peotone.

Well, from what I heard, he only called everybody from UofI a racist hick one time yesterday. So, that's kind of like a "rah-rah" speech from B&B.

Man, Homer Glen was the point at which we didn't need any more new suburbs. But yeah, draw a line through Wilmington, Peotone, and Beecher, and that's where downstate Illinois begins.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is still a sponsor though.

The point isn't that Beckman is a goof. That's obvious. The lede getting buried here is the idea that bernstein practices journalism or that he is somehow unbiased. He's like a fucking spin machine for Theo Epstein and he's clearly working PR for the Bulls front office.

Yeah, Dan sees himself as some sort of Journalist Emeritus from his days on the Bears beat, which confers authority on how other working journalists should do their jobs without having to live up to his own standards. Whatever, tons of journalists go into public relations.

There are hilljacks in Chicago. South of 95th and west of Cicero.

For some anything west of 90 is cornfields and hillbilies or undesirables.

Rural northern Illinois (Rockfordland?) =/= downstate Illinois, though. I once walked into a Jimmy John's in B-N and saw a handwritten sign on the door blaming a sales tax increase on people from Chicago. I don't think I'd see that in Loves Park.
