Don't you know, like, at least dozens of people that get the flu every year?
Two people in my house just got wiped out - down and out for 3 days - by the flu.

I do realize that.

With the flu strain changing each year, how would a flu shot based on last year's strain been of any help to you?

I get that part of questioning the flu shot.

I don't get the "manufactured fear mongery" part about the flu. I've had a legit bad-ass flu like 3 times in my adult life. It absolutely sucks balls and I feel like I want to die when I have it. I feel terrible for my kids when they have it. Unless I am mongering myself in which case I need to have a serious conversation.

I've literally never heard of anybody getting hospitalized for the flu under the age of......80. Everybody you know really gets hospitalized when they have the flu?

I have been in the room more than once when docs/nurses have tried the " you really need to do this" to get my parents or mother in law to get flu shots.

That's my point. Lots get the flu, few are hospitalized or die from it. It's possible and likely imo that flu related death numbers are inflated. There are signs all over Jewel, news stories and pressure from drs to get your flu shot blah blah blah but they don't know what strain they are going to be seeing. Weird but seems they are working on people's fears.

I'm not a doctor. Am I?

But I don't think it is based on last year's strain. I thought it was based on analysis of what they expect is breaking out.

That said, I never get the shot. That makes me sick. I never get the flu.

I don;t get the shot because I fear death. I don;t know anybody that gets the shot because they fear death.

I get the shot because I do not want to get the flu. It sucks.

The last time I had the flu, about 10 years ago, was about 15 days after my flu shot. Never been that sick my whole life.

No kidding.
We got the "letter" from my kids school about crap going around.
Boom. 48 hours later he got it, knocked out for 72 hours.

I did check him for mongering, but between puking he assured me it was real.

We throw our kids in a 4-hour quarantine everyday when they get home to make sure they're not symptomatic before they're allowed to start waiting on us.

I haven't had a bad flu in about four and a half years. I think it was the day after the Celtics knocked the Bulls out of the playoffs that it hit me. Am I blaming Vinny Del Negro for buckets of Kleenex and terrifying fever dreams? I'm not not blaming him.

Honestly I can't believe I don't get sick more than I do. I am in 7 or so homes a day, fucking around people's house and air systems... haven't had a cold or flu in years.

Along the same lines:

Reporter Lara Logan is under quarantine after traveling to report on the Ebola crisis.
I mean, even if she was "quarantined" like ET with the damn marines surrounding her in a gigantic inflatable bubble in a suburban driveway - how fast would you volunteer to be the test subject and violate the quarantine, so to speak?

I got that rotavirus in March 2002. I'll never forget it because it was horrible and I was watching a CBS News special about 9/11 with the first footage shown from inside the towers narrated by Robert DeNiro.

Two horrible things forever associated.

They're just strengthening your immune system. Especially when they get in your bed late at night whenever they're sick.

Yes. You are right. It is based on the most likely strain to come over here based on years of study and science about how it moves from place to place.

It is certainly not based on last years strain unless last years strain is also predicted to be this years strain. Somehow though, someone who doesn't even do basic internet research on a vaccine thinks they know more than doctors who literally spend years studying it. By the way, those same doctors will simply recommend it, especially if you are around young children.

The flu vaccine doesn't protect you against all kinds of flu because that would be impossible with current medical technology. It's just like how there is pretty much no treatment for the common cold. It just is how it is. However, it does make it much less likely that you get flu, and if you are around the young, or especially the elderly who die in pretty significant numbers for it why not just get it and give them even a slightly better chance of not getting it too? Or, as spanky said, give yourself a better chance of not being miserable for a few weeks. It may not work, and you may not get it even if you don't get the shot but so what? I wear a seat belt every day and I've never been saved by it either.

Here is the really funny thing though. The same people who mention how the flu shot isn't always effective or how they didn't get it last year and didn't get the flu are many of the same people who will also fight against vaccines with clear and incredibly effective vaccines.

By the way, I understand with the flu vaccine that the choice to not get it is a valid one, unlike other vaccines where unless you have a diagnosed medical condition you should always get it. There still is virtually no downside to getting it though. We do plenty of things to keep ourselves safe that aren't guaranteed to work.

USHA: You're not going to the wedding, are you?

ELAINE: Well..

USHA: Don't go. India is a dreadful, dreadful place.

ZUBIN: You know, it's the only country that still has the plague? I mean, the plague! Please!

USHA: Here's the registry. Send her a gift, and be glad you did not have to go.

ELAINE: (Soaking it in) Right. Don't go. Send a gift. I think I understand.

ZUBIN: If I had to go to India, I wouldn't go to the bathroom the entire trip.

ELAINE: (Leaving) That's fantastic.

ZUBIN: And I'm not so crazy about Manhattan, either.

With all the talk going on and on about the measles right now and the vaccination debate the one thing that hhas not been brought up is.
If you get the fucking shit even a mild case or you don't get vaccinated you run the risk of getting shingles as an adult. Not a pleasant
experience .
