I've been offered 3 different jobs due in large part to the fact that I attended UofI. That's partly due to networking and partly due to the esteem of the college itself.

I don't know the most recent surveys but, historically, UofI has been the top rated or top 3 or so in both accounting and engineering in the country. Granted, that's only 2 disciplines but they are 2 significant ones. There are others as denis pointed out as well.

But, I disagree that UofI is some middle of the road institution. It's world-renowned and certainly didn't impede my ability to continue my education at the schools of my choosing.

Well, I have been saying this in all my posts. In most other disciplines, it is just a pick em out of the hat institution. Meaning, you are not getting hired because you went there. You'll get hired because you know someone, have other credentials, and/or interviewed well.

But, that's going to be the case with any school. Nobody is great at everything, particularly when you are a large state university that offers just about any kind of degree that you want.

Accounting and Engineering are significant programs to be excellent at teaching. If you're going to be great at something, those are pretty solid choices and significantly enhance the prestige of the university on the whole.

Your ranking listed Princeton as #1 but it seems mainly because of their graduate programs based on the details. UofI's graduate program isn't the strongest, IMO, maybe that hurts them.

Shouldn't one be hiring people for those reasons (well, the last two out of the three), anyway?

Any hiring manager that uses what college the applicant graduated from as a measure of employability is a moron.

Illinois, and other schools, also get hurt by the methodology that "high retention rates" and "student selectivity" make a school better. Everyone pretty much knows a school like Notre Dame is incredibly difficult to get into and pretty easy to graduate from. Many Ivy schools are the same(see grade inflation).

The Ivy League schools and Notre Dame and others basically exist to keep the good old boys network going for a bunch of companies that are built around the idea. That works well for Goldman Sachs. It doesn't work so well for IBM and Microsoft.

odds are anyone who is making career decisions at age 17 is a pretty boring person. they're probably very safe and secure in their careers though.

Would I do things different if I did it over again, but choosing U of A over U of I was not one of them

I would study harder for the verbals on my SAT's and go to Notre Dame. Should have read more books as a kid.....

Ya, all your posts about choosing UofA or celebrating UofA have involved everything but academics. Hence I'll assume school wasn't your primary focus.

If you were able to funde 4 years of raging then congrats. Good for you.

There ya go, you assume I spent 4 years of partying with no implications is pretty foolish. I would tell you almost NO parent would allow that, even the most forgiving ones.

Let's start a fund to pay off Kirkwood's loans. With that inferior education, he does not command a premium salary in the marketplace. #saveKwood

At least he doesn't regret his choice of undergrad!

I kinda do. I never once received a subtly burrito tweet from Crean. I did see Bill Lynch once walking around on a Saturday morning and said Hi.

I shook Hilary Clinton's hand in the quad after she made a speech while Bill was running for President. She has cold hands. I ended up voting for Ross Perot, my first election where I was eligible to vote.

Saturdays were rough for him. That probably made his day.

In his first campaign Obama visited Bloomington in spring during Little 500. Gave him a fist bump! Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds came that same weekend for a free concert in support of Barack. He won Indiana that year. Now that's how you steal a state!

Hah yeah he did steal that state. I think Richard Lewis or someone like that opened for Hilary. I just can't say for sure. I was so worried Bush was going to get me drafted into military service. I voted Republican, blank, Libertarian, and for Jack Daniels (yes the drink in Schaumburg's mayoral election) ever since.

I was there that day also and saw her at the Union.

I was struck by how thick her calves were. It seemed unnatural for a woman her size. They were like small tree trunks.

Which famous person opened for her, was it Richard Lewis?

I don't recall. I think I just caught her at the end as she was leaving.

I was most likely at class or getting drunk or both.

Ken, would you mind telling me what you majored in down there? I was a BioChem major. It would give me a perspective on your earlier comments about job prospects and the quality of education.
