For holding the door for them. Or other things of the like.

Christ, I hold the door for some lady. Probably in her 60s. Not only does she not say "thank you". She gave me a dirty look. WTF?

Ah, I've a spirited argument or two over the ethics of holding doors open for people. Apparently it can mean that you presume a woman is too feeble to open a door herself, or that you want something from her. I just hold doors open when the alternative is to let a door slam in someone's face, and I certainly don't try to get anything out of it.

"Hi, I'm noted CSFMB poster Curious Hair. Are you that old man I held the door for at Egg Harbor this morning? You may remember that I went miles out of my way to be mildly deferential and hold a door open for you before you sat down for breakfast. Well, that may have been breakfast, but there's no such thing as a free lunch, so, well, let's get this over with..."

She wasn't walking well. Limping. SHE WAS FEEBLE. No assumption was needed. She was in her 60s. She knew I didn't want to bang her.

Your theory doesn't apply here. She damn well was happy I did it. Saved here time and the struggle. Still gave the dirty look with no thank you.

Why can't it be as simple as "She's a bitch".

Somethings don't need more of an explanation.

The lack of manners in society today is astounding and unfortunate.

Right. But that was said when I was a kid. This lady was 60 years old. So what's the message? Americans have always been ass holes. No matter the age or generation they come from.

American kids are ass holes. American elderly are ass holes. It was that way in 1776. Its the same way in 2015.

Always has been, always will be.

Cheers.

Score another point for the virtues of the revolving door.

Actually, revolving doors can cause their own awkwardness. Should the man go first to push the door and make it easier for the woman to follow, or would some women take that as being rude since the man didn't let her go first?

I've always wondered that.

I'm continually befuddled by this board's obsession with social deportment.

It all starts by dispensing with "hello, how are you" to open a phone call.

Would it be better if we all said please and thank you but had separate water fountains for different races?

I only say that because I'm thinking of the good manners society and immediately thought 50s

Being polite, courteous, even chivalrous is not meant to be something for which you are thanked, it should be something that you are without a second thought.

100% agree. A month ago, I come home around 6 p.m. and notice my neighbor's headlights are on. I check back after being home for about 20 minutes, and they're still on. So I knock on his door and let him know his lights are on. He just says "okay," and walks back inside. Fast forward to last week, before the youge snowstorm, and I see his kid left one of his car doors open. Do I say anything? Hell no. The lack of appreciation for my last good deed did not go unnoticed. Let's just say I got a good chuckle at the accumulation in his backseat.

Someone stole a shovel from my Condo's hallway on saturday.

One of my neighbors bought a shovel to keep the front walkway clear (his elderly mother...or gf? visits often)

It dissappeared saturday and I saw a note on the door that read

REALLY Someone stole MY shovel????

When I got home last night the note was re-taped to the door with more tape, like he was doubling down. There are six units. One lady never uses our side. One place is empty. So there's only 3 of us it could be.

Not sure who he thinks stole a shovel but I left a note on his door saying I didnt take it and have no use for a shovel and to check with the cleaning lady

I was considering just buying a new one to be nice because I never realized that was him cleaning off the front the last couple years. But the re-taping of the note changed that.

As of this am, the note on his door and the bottom door is gone.

So anyway, anyone wanna buy a used shovel? (kidding)
