Im not trying to tell you what to do with your kids, obviously. You started this out with a broad statement about all kids.

Im sure you know what's best for yours.

I will say that my time as a caddie never felt like work and I would never trade that time for anything. Also, its pretty easy to get a scholarship if you're a good student who caddies

And some of us have actually done it!

At age of 8 I attended Camp Northstar and thought it sucked. Bernstein went and thought it was great. he stayed until he was 18.

I then went to a Sports camp stayed until I was 12, some stay until they 13.

Those who make a life of summer camp, as Danny B did have some issues. Unless they come up with $1 mill and buy the business, thats a different story.

My nephew now goes to Northstar camp, he is 11 and is scared to go downstairs by himself oh and he is good friends with the younger Bernstein

I caddied at Medina, but I was able to ride my bike there. I have no problem with kids taking jobs, but I would prefer it happen when my kids are 16 and can drive themselves.


I was simply saying parents need to find something for their kids to do. Of all the kids I know, only a few play travel ball because the kids are either not interested or not good enough. The problem is, most parents do not find those viable alternatives. A lot of moms will get a summer pool pass and take the kids nearly every day. Other drop their kids off at the local gym to play basketball and other sports. But that idle Xbox is quite tempting as a babysitter.

The problem is a lot of parents don't just treat it as a way to keep their kid active. They start to treat it like some sort of attempt for college scholarships or even higher and they start to care way too much about the results and ability of the team. There is also a lot of living vicariously through the kids.

If it was just about being active, then the local leagues would provide more than enough opportunity to let the kid have fun.

Fair enough. My experience with the two travel teams that we played on and the teams we played against, it is about teaching the kids to improve as players and have fun. I am considered one of the more intense parents, and we do it because our family loves baseball. I place a much higher emphasis on their schooling than sports. I have aspirations of an academic scholarship over a sports scholarship. In all my discussions with coaches and other parents, none of us have any illusion of a sports scholarship.

I think most parents dream big on behalf of their kids, while understanding the reality of the situation. Our kids will not play major league baseball and not attend Harvard. Those are very exclusive clubs. As such, we simply have fun with the sport.

I've seen too many marriages on the brink of destruction because these parents have their kids involved in too much stuff. I work with kids that are in 5th-8th grade. I can't tell you how many of them are in travel sports only to hear them constantly talking about how much they hate it. both scenarios have me leary of those types of commitments. my children (all girls) are 4-7-9 and to be honest we are busy as hell already and none of them have expressed much interest in playing sports. they are involved in different groups and we have our commitments as well. we get to spend all weekends doing whatever we want and our kids are not want for entertainment. This certainly may change and our little village out in the boonies apparently has great sports groups.

our kids have tried multiple sports. soccer, basketball, gymnastics. my middle child is naturally athletic and would excel at any sport she found that she liked but she likes spending time at home with us playing games and other stuff.

I played every sport on the planet growing up but we could only afford travel team stuff for just 1. and then it was pretty much just me and my mother as my father worked weekends. We have a close family/community of friends who always get together and when I was gone on those weekends where I missed it, I was devastated. Just the kind of guy I am I guess.

and our kids have ipod touches/kindle fires and they get 1/2 hour a day on them. we live on a couple of acres so there is plenty of stuff for them to do in the summer. my wife hardly sees them during the day in once it thaws out.

travel sports is a great way to get away from the wife you hate.
