In this thread you've told us you never played travel sports.
You don't have kids.
Do you coach travel teams even though you don't have kids and never played them?

What exactly is some of the "extensive" experience you have in youth travel sports?

It's ok to not be an expert at everything
I played local youth sports my whole life, played in high school, and was a youth sports camp counselor for six years.

Note: I never said travel sports, but it wouldn't be a spanky post if he didn't have a huge gap in what he read of mine.

This is stupid.

Tell your losing kids to go out there, and be a man.

If you are winning team, I'm fine with calling off steals and stuff like that, but you can't tell your guys to not try. Maybe put in your worst kid as pitcher and let him throw a few innings.

I don't want to completely dismiss travel. I think it has many benefits. It's just gotten weird and its getting weirder.

It's a dangerous game. You need to coordinate with the other coaches before telling a kid not to try. Because of the bad blood between JRW and EP I doubt that was going to happen.

Telling a kid to stand there at home plate and not swing has zero consequences. Telling a kid to swing at everything usually means they will pop it up or strike out. Really not that dangerous compared to competitive situations.

On defense, you save your good pitchers and just throw a kid out there that is easy to hit. Most rosters have about five solid pitchers and then a few guys that just throw soft strikes.

The whole thing is self serving because you just want to get your winning team off the field and save their energy for the next game. Saving your best pitchers is a great strategy for tourneys.

No, not in a tourney. You want your kids to get off the field as fast as possible. You have to play 5-6 games in two days. Saving your pitchers and not wearing out the hitters is self serving.

You want to save your "resources" for competitive games.

Edit: I am referring to when you are winning. When you are losing, you try like hell. You want your kids to go up there and swing against good pitching.

Not even close to surprised this is happening...

It will all settle down after this show takes the headlines away from the golden children!

A "Matt from Peoria" just called in to Kass & Cohn on WLS with some good comments regarding this. Was it CSFMB "Peoria Matt"? If so, well done, sir. Inquiring minds and all...

It wouldn't be a BRick post if he didn't change the discussion to fit his ever-changing argument.

The discussion, largely including you, was the benefit/detriment of travel sports. It went on for pages. You then said "I have some pretty extensive experience with youth sports"

Either you were still laboring to support your uninformed point of view, or you were just sputtering out a useless statement that did not contribute to the conversation at all. I'll let you pick.

Unless of course, you took one course on it in college, in which case you probably do consider that "pretty extensive experience".

I don't know what your complex is but it may be time to figure out why you make posts like this towards me. Clearly something about me gets to you on a deep level.

I spent a lot of time in many different parts of youth sports and I was also talking to others involved in youth sports and in my opinion I was able to learn a lot about the whole thing. I also had friends and teammates who were involved in the travel side and they would talk about their experiences to me also. Being the camp counselor really gave me a wide range of experiences from other coaches, players, and parents too.

But, let me point out I didn't go into this seeking to say "I know stuff because of my life experiences". I was basically called out for not having kids and therefore not having a good idea on what is involved. If you don't feel my experience is worth much I don't really care.

I think once one passes 1,000 posts here, "mental issues" are just par for the course.

Not one person here can be considered "normal" - IMO, of course.

Agreed.
