I know where the middle of the middle is, but I think the question was, where does the line between middle and rich begin.

Just did my taxes over the weekend...but I am happy to pay my (less than :) ) fair share.

I think maybe you making these "what is my fair share" statements might lead some to believe you arent middle class.

I mean, no one is yelling for the middle class to "pay their share"

Aww come on, I already admitted you were right. Do I have to do so twice in one day?

How about this? You tell me your definition of middle class either by income or wealth, and I will let you know if I am middle class.

$80k to $200k for an individual.

WHat I find interesting is people vilifying the pensioners, teachers, police, state workers, etc. The reason we have a pension problem is not their fault, they paid their share of the bargain. What happened was the state did not fund the pensions They went and spent it on other stuff, what did they spend it on? Roads? No. Schools?no. Paying off Bills?no. What they did was create more bloated govt thus making the pension problem even worse. Add to the fact that even during the years when the state was doing well we where still not paying our bills correctly. Where has all this money gone? The Feds really have to come in and audit the fuck out of this state, especially if we are going to do the bankruptcy thing. Hate to say it but they might just have to do what was done in the Southern states after the Civil war and the Feds take over the running of the state, all the current elected officials are kicked out and it is started all over again.

Well, it's an arbitrary definition, so I guess you're right.

It depends on where you live, obviously. Chicago would be on the high end.

The term rich only has two definitions:
1) Person makes at least 20% more than me.
2) Person has cooler stuff even if they are in debt and can never consider retiring.

I'm sure that there are many many CSFMB'rs who are in the 80th to 95th percentiles. Congrats!

I was very fortunate to learn early on that things aren't always as they appear to be.

But the fact that you might be in the 50th percentile for income wouldn't necessarily make you "middle class" since that term is intended to signify a certain level of social status, control over one's economic circumstances, buying power, etc. The fact that the median household income in the U.S. is somewhere around $50,000/year suggests that many Americans are standing on the precipice of insolvency. That ain't middle class.

I told DB to buy Radio Shack, the price doubled and I was mocked. #ICantTradeForYou

EDIT: See, he doesnt even understand that a 20-50% profit is a good thing. To this day, he believes I was wrong to suggest buying a stock that immediately rose 20% and eventually nearly tripled.

Still not sure if you understand how right I was.

You could have literally doubled your money if you would have listened.

Is 50% not good enough for you?

It should have been that you made $32 million, since you were saying that $40 million a year made you rich.

The link I gave in my original post had an excellent comparison of IL income taxes vs the surrounding states. It is right in the mix on that metric. I think property taxes are what that really pushes Illinois up the tables on total tax take.

My problem is that even with all the taxes we pay, the budget and pension are still facing big holes.

As I have asked in the past, how much do I have to pay in percentage terms so that no left leaning person will say more taxes are the answer? I am willing to pay that percentage, which I believe 75% was the number I got last time. I will pay that much if Elizabeth Warren wants. Then when we are still short of funds for schools, roads, military, healthcare, etc, I will smile politely and die a happy man.

Yeah but isn't that a function of a historically low corporate tax rate? Aren't corporations taxed at about 10-20% of the rate they paid in the Eisenhower era? Inequality has obviously skyrocketed over the past three decades; the state's financial problems are in part a function of that social dynamic.

$50K in Des Moines or Omaha is certainly different than $50K in San Fran or NYC.
