Minnie Minoso, the first black player for the Chicago White Sox, passed away Sunday morning. He was 90.

The outfielder was born in Cuba and played 17 seasons in the MLB. He was denied entry into the Hall of Fame last year.

Minoso, who lived in the 3700 block of North Lake Shore Drive, died at 1:09 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

The “Cuban Comet” blazed a trail for Latin American players in the big leagues starting in the 1950s. Minoso drove in 100 runs four times for the Sox and hit .300 or better six times.

Minoso was denied entry into the Hall of Fame in December, failing to receive the necessary votes from the 16-member Golden Era Committee. Minoso received eight of the 12 votes needed.

Minoso played for the Sox from 1951-57, ’60-61, ’64, and briefly as a player-coach in ’76 and ’80. He received nine of the 12 votes needed when the Golden Era Committee, which replaced the former Veterans Committee elect candidates not eligible by the Baseball Writers Association of America, first met in 2011. The committee meets and votes every three years.

A boyhood idol Go Go Go.....a shame he wasn't on the 59 team :( As a lad I got his autograph he gave me the pen back put the ball in his glove and down the ramp he went  Had to run to the 3rd base box seats were he was playing catch with Jim Rivera. I yelled at him to give me the ball back ...he laughingly tossed it back. One helluva a ball player

They should prop up the body so that he can be the first player to play in a Major League game while dead.

Adam Dunn already accomplished that for the Sox.

My dad met him when I was about 6, and got an autograph for me. I was like, "Who?". Still have the autograph, though.

RIP. :(

He was a regular at Sluggers. I mean a non game attendee at the bar all time. Parked right up on the sidewalk all the time. did have two Sox flags flying on his car at all times, where he was also found dead, in his car at the Diversey Shell station.

The only Cuban outfielder to be alive in at least part of 10 different decades.

We'll ask Bernstein and Goff. They're the experts.

A guy I worked with a few years ago met Minnie while he was working at Hollywood video. He didn't have his membership card, but showed my friend one of his baseball cards to prove his identity. My friend refused to accept that, and he said Minnie got pissed and stormed out.

This is where I met him, in one of the back rooms there either before or after a Cubs game. Chatted with him for a minute or so. Seemed like a nice guy.

They also asked Maddon about the 2005 ALCS. He really, really, really...um, dislikes Doug Eddings.

Everyone talks about how there are no black players in the MLB. When someone points to a guy like David Ortiz, people always say he's not black, he is a latin player. That's all I was trying to say.

Dan Bernstein did this with Alfonso Soriano. He tweeted that the Cubs have no black players on the roster. People pointed out Soriano. Unfortunately, Dan didn't say something like "no, I don't mean skin black, I mean like word-up-homie black."
