forever

John Darnielle, Mountain Goats, lives in Raleigh now. I try not to hold it against him. April 18th at the Vic, I'll be there

What's left of the Carolina Country Club comes into town to take on the retooled Hawks. The Cam Ward/Anton Khudobin platoon has been respectable, but they can't score for shit, which is an inversion of how the Hurricanes usually suck. They're still as puppy-soft as ever, though they, among others, have passed the Hawks for the league's best penalty kill. Looking at the numbers for the first time in a while, it's amazing how much the Hawks have fallen.

The Hurricanes are also doing that thing they do where they blow goats but then win enough games to take themselves out of the cellar where they belong, and then they never draft as well as they should. They've won their last three, including a win over the formidable Islanders.

Look for the Eric Staal Hat Trick: an assist, a goal after the outcome is decided, and a restraining foul.

Eager to see how the pieces come together! I think all three will be in the lineup.

Canes: 24-30-7 (55), 22-34-6 adjusted (49), 52.465 expected
Hawks: 37-21-5 (79), 29-23-11 adjusted (69), 74.851 expected

Canes: 30.4 shots for (14th), 27.6 shots against (4th)
Hawks: 34.3 shots for (1st), 29.6 shots against (17th)

Canes: 2.262 scored (26th), 2.574 allowed (14th), -.311 differential (23rd)
Hawks: 2.778 scored (14th), 2.333 allowed (3rd), .444 differential (8th)

Canes: 35/185 18.9% on the power play (10th), 134/152 88.2% on the kill (1st)
Hawks: 39/216 18.1% on the power play (16th), 143/167 85.6% on the kill (5th)

Garbage team, must-win game.

Wow, the Vic? WTG goofy ass songwriter dude. Recall seeing him play the Empty Bottle to a crowd of about 20 people around the time of All Hail West Texas.

Couldn't remember if it was this show or this one, until I googled up this review and recall the guy from MK Ultra opened for him:

Quote:
John Vanderslice, Mountain Goats, Empty Bottle, Mar. 8
I would have thought Vanderslice’s live setup would be more elaborate, with his home-studio made albums that sometimes recall Neutral Milk Hotel in their ambitious arrangements. Vanderslice looked boyish in his shaggy blonde hair and ratty Chuck Taylors, but his songs portrayed a wisdom better suited to his age. Despite the spare setup of just John and his drummer, he filled the room with passionate singing and sometimes volatile guitar playing, particularly on the highlight, “Time Travel Is Lonely.” His drummer, a bloke from Minneapolis who was seen commiserating with Shellac’s Todd Trainer before the show, was incredible, sitting right at the front of the stage, wowing the audience with his eccentric style and difficult time signatures. I’ve never been a big fan of the Mountain Goats (John Darnielle), who has about a jillion albums full of under-produced 4-track recordings. However, his charisma and engaging storytelling drew me in, and I was cheering for the several encores along with everyone else. Though the sheer number of songs is overwhelming, and I still can’t remember a single damn one.

Mtn Goat-fucking dude played forever [ it seemed, i was there with a chick in town for the occasion and thought we were wasting valuable time better spent not listening to stories about life in Iowa, where I think Darnielle lived at the time ] and told stories in between songs that lasted longer than the actual songs. I didn't see it on the set list from the archive site but I swear he played an Ace of Base cover that seemed to go on forever.

I hope the Hurricanes players didn't bring any wives on the trip because as we all know it takes just a glance from one Patrick Sharp and women will bust up their marriages in a second to climb in the sack with him. Really , its true!!

Sharp looking pretty dull tonight.
If only he could bury pucks as easily as he buries his beak.

$100 says that Sharpie nails that goalie's wife in the next 48 hours.

Man, Toews sure does look like he's on the downside of his career. Right CH?

Now that Vermette is there to share the "little things that don't show up on the score sheet" role, toews is going to be freed up to go on a tear....like tonight.

Yeah Im pretty sure he could be 40 goals plus a year if he didn't give a shit about doing anything else.

Yea. Semin is stealing from the Canes. He's been terrible all year.

Fucking Hossa still has the best release on the team. Well maybe second best next to Sharp's.

Ok so he's still in.
Look, it's 5-1 with a nickel remaining, why not take him out? I don't get that.

They don't play again until Friday and it's Edmonton...

Coach Q could just lay a duffle bag in front of the net and the Hawks still win by two goals.

I have been a big critic of Toews for the majority of this year thinking he gets too much credit and not enough blame. When he plays well by burying pucks, you can see the impact on the entire team. We all know he is a responsible center that wins draws, but he has to be a scorer as well. When he produces, the team looks solid. Here's hoping he stays hot.

Not to sound like a hockey elitest but I'm not sure going into this trade that alot of you understood how great of a two way center Vermette is. Anything less than offensive brilliance by Toews now is totally unacceptable. No more excuses. Great start last night.

I think Vermette taking some defensive responsibilities off his line will help him very much.

It's easy to say this was a tomato can, but I guess Cam Ward had never lost in regulation to the Hawks before, and here he couldn't even finish the game. It's weird how teams you rarely see can find ways to be a pain in the ass.

The difference last night is that Toews buried the puck. So many times this year (shootouts excepted), he would have a clear path to the goalie and not bury it. When he finishes like that, it makes a huge difference. How many times have we complained about the Hawks being behind early in the game?

I expect Toews to score consistently. When he does, it's a beautiful thing.

So here's the new plan. We kick the shit out of the Blues and Preds and then Kane comes back in the WCF and we ass rape the Kings before destroying whatever joke of a team comes out of the East in the SCF. Who's with me? Hands in. Commit to the Indian.
