Only 6 starts, 26, #2 pass rusher according to PFF

Aaron Leming ‏@AaronLemingNFL 9m9 minutes ago
Report: #Bears are closing in on 5 year deal with OLB Pernell McPhee. Deal is expected to be worth just under $40M total.

Interesting pickup. Recent big name defensive players let go by the Ravens has been mixed:

Paul Kruger
Dannell Ellerbe
Cary Williams
Arthur Jones

That system they run makes these guy look better than they are.

He's got a knack for the dramatic

McPhee recorded a strip-sack on quarterback Peyton Manning. The Ravens would then win that game 38-35 in double overtime. On January 20, 2013, in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots, McPhee tipped a pass from quarterback Tom Brady that led to an interception by Dannell Ellerbe with 6:49 remaining in regulation. This led to the Ravens winning that game 28-13 and earning a trip to Super Bowl XLVII, where they would defeat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.

good pickup. He's a FA LB, which is a critical need, but he is still young.

So draft a guy. Or sign an undervalued guy (aka Willie Young type). Not a career back up coming off a career year for $8 million.

Isn't that why Pace, Fox and Fangio were hired? Draft and teach?

That's exactly what they are doing. He's 26, about to enter his prime. He needs to be coached up to be an every down player. The PFF article even calls out the need for him to have a good coordinator, and it seems like Vic is that guy.

Organizationally the Ravens are the gold standard of draft and develop on defense. They have former defensive staff as head coaches and coordinators across the league. Using PFF is why Emery is unemployed.

You can find the sentiment about McPhee needing a good coordinator outside of PFF as well.

Also, that's not why Emery is unemployed... now you're being even more silly.

Emery cited PFF when signing Willie Young, FWIW.

He also wasn't a long-time starter:

Quote:
Young, a former seventh-round pick out of NC State, received his first extensive playing time in 2013, becoming a full-time starter after Jason Jones was lost for the season to injury in Week 3.

With the Bears I just take the opposite position of Bears managment, Bucky Chris and PFF and am right 80% of the time.

He's gotta be an upgrade from what we have. A lot of money? Well yeah but I'd rather gamble on a young guy with some upside
than signing an 30 yr old vet or depend on a rookie to catch up to the curve. Looking back they should have taken the LB from
Alabama CJ Mosley last year.

never heard of him, but i had never heard of willie young either. my only unfounded hesitation with this signing is was this guy a product of a baltimore defense where there are 2 other pass rushers teams are game planning to stop first?

If he becomes a captain and Marshall were still on the team he could be Nanny Mc Phee

Quote:
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported minutes into Tuesday's free-agency launch that the Bears and defensive end John Doe agreed to a five-year, $35 million deal with $15 million in guarantees, according to a source. The organization later confirmed the move.

John Doe played at a Pro Bowl level for the NFL Team this past season and gives Bears defensive coordinator a moveable chess piece in Chicago's scheme. Ranking fifth on Around The League's list of the top 101 free agents, the 26-year-old defender piled up six sacks in 2013 and ranked eighth in the NFL with 16 hits on the passer.

John Doe is also a strong presence against the run, which looms as critical for a Bears team that finished last in that category this past season, allowing a league-worst 161.4 yards per game on the ground.

I did a terrible job trying to be vague. We can all see the above player is LaMarr Houston. What is the point in getting LaMarr Houston 2.0? He's already on the damn roster.

During Houston's contract year with the Raiders he was at 275-280 at 6'3. McPhee is 6'3 280. Both were darlings of the awful ProFootballFocus. Now instead of getting sheltered behind Suggs and Dumervil, McPhee gets to complement old man Allen, Young, Houston and whatever draft pick.
