Based on this comment from you JORR, I'm guessing you don't really think he's still the best GM in baseball.

Maybe trading away Addison is good proof he's gone off the deep end.

Found this in this article as well. Look's like one of Beane's guys came up with the Jeter comp:

http://www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammo ... r-russell/

Quote:
Watching him this spring with one of Beane’s most trusted lieutenants, I had a Derek Jeter comp laid on Russell. When Beane and Theo Epstein agreed on the deal, Beane told him, “you got Barry Larkin.”

"you got a new Cadillac!" says the guy who just sold you a 1987 Chevette. before/during/after, Beane was selling Russell and wants to make Theo feel good about the transaction. ya know, so Theo will think "gee, i should buy all my crappy used cars from this guy"

Well, Beane's scouts told Gammons of the Jeter comp in AZ fall league.

So, while I know it may be hard to consider... but maybe, just maybe, the A's actually liked him but just thought they were making a deal that could help them win the World Series. It's crazy, I know. But let's just consider it.

This is also a consensus top 5 prospect, not some random guy. So the praise of his talents shouldn't be totally shocking.

jeez, happens every year.

Ian Stewart was a top 5 prospect.

Remember Joel Guzman? He was once a top 5 prospect: “He’s Juan Gonzalez waiting to happen." well....he's still waiting to happen.

Brandon Wood, top 3 prospect at one point, "He looks like the next Cal Ripken to me." Wood played parts of 5 seasons in the majors and ended up with a career .500 OPS.

Odds are Russell ends up closer to one of the above former "top 5 prospects" than Jeter or Larkin.

Russell's going to struggle to get on base vs major league RHP--cuz he struggles to get on base vs AA RHP. And that, i'm guessing, is why Beane, despite his pre/during/post sales pitch, likely loses no sleep over letting Russell go.

So, even though this guy is universally a top 3-5 prospect in all of baseball by nearly everyone, Beane is the only guy that's figured out he isn't very good?

I gotta kiss that guy's ring...when he gets one.

Are you aware he cannot hit RHP? Probably should take up knitting or something. Cannot play baseball.

Or maybe not every GM is as obsessed with OBP as Beane is? I didn't say it's a good thing Beane values OBP over seemingly everything else. Just pointing out that in both the Cespesdes trade and in the Russell trade Beane discharged players who either currently or likely will if/when they make the majors struggle to get on base at a rate that Beane's happy with.

Seriously, do you think the fact that Beane drafted him and Epstein traded for him have no effect on that "universal consideration"?

.281/.318/.491

.809 OPS - pretty fucking terrible!

A lot of long time guy style posting recently. "Let me just say some shit and hopefully no one will go verify it and I'll win an argument."

Not this time, folks.

There's a vast ocean between overpaying for a half season of Samardzija and trading away Jeter/Larkin.

I'm sure no one expects him to slug .500 in the big leagues.

against AA pitching.... .318 in AA translates to what in the majors? fwiw, Cespedes for his career is .263 .316 .464 and Beane found him easily disposable for a month long rental arm. Tho Cespesdes was/is trending down in OBP, down to .296 in 2014 and he's been hovering around .300 last few seasons.

JORR - please go on the record for me with some actual statistics.

In the first season Addison Russel has at least 300 at-bats in the majors, give me his slash line, and any other statistics you think pertinent.

Put numbers on it. And be held to them.

Proceed.

It doesn't translate into any number, high or low. There are players that outhit their numbers in the minors, and players that never live up to those numbers. There is no equation.

Miguel Cabrera's minor league OPS was .782 across all levels. He has never had a major league season at that number or below.

But to be fair, if a guy is a slick middle infielder a .300 OBP isn't tragic in today's game, especially if it comes with a little pop. I'm not bashing Russell so much as the hyperbolic bullshit emanating from Cubs fans and PR men.

Within the last week we've discovered they have Ruth and Jeter and that isn't even considering Bryant.

Excellent post.

Now predict a slash line please. It is very difficult to put any weight into you completely disregarding other folks predictions when you fail to provide any of your own.

dude-man, just an internet message board.

also, it'll depend on how the Cubs use him. Russell struggles enough against RH pitching, they could platoon him some.

I have no idea. But I wouldn't bet on him being better than Howie Kendrick. That's a fine big league player. It's just not something to jizz all over yourself about or to stop you from trading him for a starting pitcher that might help you.

Someone sent Bernstein an email about Schwarber being Babe Ruth.

But of course now that means every single Cubs fan ever agrees with it and should be held accountable for it.

Give him the whole story. Supposedly some Cubs source sent bernstein the e-mail. In addition, a drunken Cubs executive said the same thing to Spiegel. We do not know if it was the same guy or if bernstein's e-mail was real.

I think we have all learned that some here are in a very fragile and obsessive state of mind that the Cubs may be very good in the near future. Sox thread on this board is lonely most days as the worry and paranoia grows. They lurk here. CRAZY.

Well maybe he swings like Ruth. Kinda like Borchard could hit as far as Mantle.

Borchard did hit a couple as far as Mantle. Goofy Walt acting like he was telling people something by saying Borchard was a bum. Yeah, no shit. Now I'm going over to post in the "Chicago is cold in winter" thread.
