Actually, it's called laughing at stupidity. You don't want to bet on Russell being as good as Jeter. Do you want to bet on Schwarber being as good as Ruth?

There's no such thing as a gambling problem. There's only a losing problem. And I assure you that if you bet that Schwarber is anywhere near as good as Ruth or that Russell comes close to Jeter's career, you will have one.

Now we're talking about Miguel Cabrera's stats when he was a spindly 17 year old.

Actually, Cabrera's a great example.

Pretty direct comparison right here:

Cabrera played half of his age 20 season in the minors, AA, in fact.

.365/.429/.609 in 303 PA at AA (ya know, where Russell's killing it with his .318 OBP vs RHP in 2014)

That very same season, Miguel Cabrera jumps to the majors and this is his slash line for the remainder of his age 20 season, against MLB pitching.

.268/ .325 / .468 in 346 PA's

so about a 30% reduction in OBP going from AA to MLB pitching?

Thanks for helping me make my point, IMU.

It does seem like Russell's numbers took a hit after his injury last year (not sure what the split was between LH/RH pitching in that first 2 months of the season). On his return from injury Russell never achieved the numbers he did for the first part off that season. Could've been the level of competition. Could be he faced a lot of LH pitching in that early part of the season. Could be his injury impacted his hitting going forward. Who knows.

I'd guess a .318 OPS at the AA level would fall to mid-to-high .200's at the MLB level (vs RHP) at best.

Wait, what point are you making? You've said all players' stats decrease as they move up. Cabrera has better major league stats than minor league stats. Now you want to add a caveat that you can only use their last year in the minors versus their first year in the majors?

Russell hasn't even had either yet but lol.

Did you even think about your point before posting that last post?

So all the Ruth talk originated from Bernstein and a Red Sox fan and it's being applied to the entire Cubs fanbase?

Russell's .318 OPS is from a single season in AA, his most recent/last in the minors.

Cabrera's .429 OPS is also from a single season in AA, his most recent/last in the minors.

Both were versus AA pitching.

Cabrera's OPS fell to .325 when he went from facing AA pitching to facing MLB pitching.

No, I'm not comparing Cabrera's stats when he was a 17 year old to his MLB stats.

Cabrera's .429 OPS vs AA pitching at age 20 is an apples to apples comparison to Russell's .318 OPS vs AA pitching (RHP) at age 20.....

Cabrera's OPS took a nose dive (30% reduction) when he went from AA to MLB. Russell's OPS will do the same.

You're right. Totally stupid. No Cub fan is excited about any player that has never had a single major league at-bat. How could I be so stupid?

I guess I imagined that 100+ page thread on Cub prospects. Oh for those halcyon days when Cub fans were comparing some pitcher named Simpson who has long since been forgotten to Oswalt and Lincecum.  Nowadays we have to settle for humdrum comparisons of Russell to Jeter and Schwarber to Ruth.

Just to be absolutely clear on the comps:

Schwarber - Babe Ruth, from Bernstein and Speigel (allegedly from Cubs sources)

Russell - Larkin, Beane to Epstein after the trade

Russell - Jeter, Beane's people way before the trade

You'll notice one thing missing... the supposed opinion of "Cubs fans." None of those come from Cubs fans, but somehow they get attributed to them.

To me, pretending Cubs fans as a whole are saying these things is some of the most odd behavior ever. I truly don't understand it. I really don't.

Hard to believe. Most Cub fans were absolutely horrified, rightly so, with that pick.

You read a few idiots on a message boards and then apply it to the whole fanbase. It's silly.

His OPS against RH was .809. That'll do.

Come on. No Cub fan is posting something like, "Tim Wilken says Simpson is like Oswalt or Lincecum" to illustrate the stupidity of Tim Wilken. Don't be disingenuous.

Didn't you post the Babe Ruth comment? Either way, it's a radio show board so things they say will be posted.

More importantly, even if they post them here, that doesn't mean it's the general sentiment of the fan base. That is your weird delusion.

Are you kidding me? You are off your rocker if you think people quoting the Babe Ruth thing are doing anything but mocking the comparison.

And yes, the fact that some baseball person out there made that ridiculous comparison speaks to the fact that the kid must be decent.

And NO ONE liked Hayden Simpson.

Someone sent Bernstein an email about Schwarber being Babe Ruth.

But of course now that means every single Cubs fan ever agrees with it and should be held accountable for it.

Give him the whole story. Supposedly some Cubs source sent bernstein the e-mail. In addition, a drunken Cubs executive said the same thing to Spiegel. We do not know if it was the same guy or if bernstein's e-mail was real.

Well maybe he swings like Ruth. Kinda like Borchard could hit as far as Mantle.

Full story reported, still no Cub fan said it.

I'm not sure if you're mocking it or embracing it. Seriously, it seems like you want to do both. You know comparing anyone to Ruth is silly, but you want to take the fact that some Cubs exec did exactly that as evidence that another one of your prospects is great instead of as evidence that another one of your executives is a moron.

Well, the thing is, I figure if the guy is comparing him to the greatest that ever lived, he might be decent. I take it as I would if the guy said "we really like Schwarber's bat"

The Babe Ruth part is ridiculous and mockable so it gets referenced

You decided a long time ago that Cub fans are optimistic fools and you will argue that til the day you die no matter what you hear or read. You are dug in with no chance of ever getting out.

Okay. I'll believe that Kyle Schwarber will never be anything close to Babe Ruth. Beyond that I have no opinion on Kyle Schwarber. And I'll believe the executive that made such a comparison is a fool.
