again, the cubs aren't contenders right now. there is too much variance. the cubs are depending on rookies at 2nd, RF, 4SP and possibly 3rd to be vital contributors.

everything needs to break right just to be in contention for the wild card.

this debate is so dumb.

somebody else gets it.

The Cubs can, and will, compete for the Wild Card this season.

Last season, both teams had 88 wins. I see the Cubs at ~83-84 wins, give or take several.

They may not win it, but they will be on "Wild Card race" graphics across ESPN and MLB come August and September.

edit: Same with the other Chicago team.

I certainly don't consider Gordon or Heyward "great" either. I admit I may be biased against Heyward when I see a 6'7" dude who looks like he could knock down Dwight Howard and yet he can barely hit 20 homers. Sort of like a reverse Corey Patterson. But I think the reason that the Braves traded him was that they actually weren't clear on how to value him.

He hit 27 homeruns in Atlanta and then they made him a lead off hitter.

Who is great?

I need some context. Heyward and Gordon are both top 5- maybe top 10 outfielders in their leagues, no?

I think that speaks more to how weak outfielders are right now. I've never seen those positions so weak in my lifetime. Trout is great. I don't know who else I would say is.

He had a very good 2012, with those 27 homers (only year he topped 20) and knocked in 82 and scored 93 runs. His OPS was 814, by far his best season.

Well, if you're competing for the Wild Card, you're competing for the World Series. They get in the playoffs and two of their starting pitchers are at their best, who knows what might happen?

Well, if one guy is great then yeah Id have to agree.

I think if you are top 5 at your position, you're great.

Also, Gordon and Heyward are those rare defenders who are sooooooo good, it does make a big difference.

There's only 1 team that matters.

Theo's not lying. He should know this team can't contend for the wild card this season. Show of hands, who thinks they can? I don't.

They definitely can.

Three questions for Hatchet and you. Have you seen the Cubs division? Do you realize they play the AL Central as well? Do you have any idea what their opening day roster will even consist of, will they truly give Baez a shot all year, Alcantara et al?

Then he got hurt in 2013

In 2014, he was asked to lead off and was a great lead off hitter and played an insanely great RF. Do you not value defense at all?

It seems like his ability to get on base and his defense are not important to you

The stats you are focusing on (HR, RBI, and OPS) are traditional power number stats. You need to look at him for what he is...a lead off guy. (If you want to judge him accurately. Obviously you can do what you want)

Hey, hey, hey ,hey
Ohhh...

Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby

Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on

Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me

Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

Will you recognise me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ohhhh.....

Don't you try to pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security

Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby

Don't You Forget About Me
Don't Don't Don't Don't
Don't You Forget About Me

As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away

Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on - call my name
Will you all my name?

I say :
La la la...

Off the top of my head (& in addition to Stanton) McCutcheon, Adam Jones, Carlos Gomez, Puig and Batista all rate above Gordon & JHey

I would call McCutcheon great too. All those other guys have holes. Adam Jones is a really nice player, but I'd stop way short of calling him great. I agree with you that all the guys you mention are better than Gordon and Heyward except possibly Bautista.

I just can't give that much weight to defense on the outfield corners, especially left. To me, Gordon's offense is woefully lacking for what I want out of my ideal leftfielder.

Heywards production hasn't come close to matching his talent level but he's only 25 years old and when/if it does he will easily be a top player in the game.

tell me why I'm mistaken. Why will the Cubs compete against the two toughest divisions in baseball? How will they do that with Baez and Alcantara getting major playing time? Why will Soler stay healthy? When they're probably going to keep three catchers because of a dumb aquisition in David Ross? When Mike Olt might be getting large playing time? Explain this to me.

Fair enough. But I don't think they are winning any Wild Card races. I just think they're competing for it. They'll be in the race, but not "in" the race.

Baez might be good. Alcantara might be good. (Why do you think he is getting "major" playing time? What is "major" playing time? He plays good defense and can spell many players at many positions.) Why won't Soler stay healthy? Welington Castillo could be the next Lenny Harris. Mike Olt still can be a good major leaguer, and is having a really good spring. He looked better at the end of 2014 as well. (.263 BA with a .738 OPS in 17 games in September)

He was a lead off hitter last year.

If he's in the middle of the line-up and they ask him to be that guy, then judge him that way.

But his 2014 should be judged based on the fact that he was a leadoff guy
