Him and Jeff they were both great ... Toto was no slouch either, except maybe charts like "I Won't Hold You Back Now" or whatever.

You're a music guy ... find me a drummer that doesn't marvel at what Jeff was doing on 'Rosanna' and I'll show you a drummer with questionable talent and no ear.

Their old man was a big name session drummer too ... ran the gamut from Getz to Madonna to Sinatra to Gladys Knight and many more ... I think Danny Elfman and John Williams used him on occasion as well.

Yes, Joe was always good for a technique or professionalism article in Modern Drummer. Looking back Mike was the only member not used in the recording of Michael Jackson's Thriller...Toto was a band with three brothers that really could groove like bad-ass mo-fo's....

Jeff was all about the groove. I really didn't "get" his playing when I was a kid, but have learned to appreciate him immensely. The groove on "Lido Shuffle" is pure genius.

(editorial thought ... if you're rather well versed in Donald & Walter, listening to just Bernard do his thing by dropping everything else out, it's interesting to consider how cool it would be to transfer that feel/tempo to "Reelin' in the Years" ... same chart, different tempo/feet ... interesting. Then if you're really looking for something to keep yourself quiet, consider an alternate timeline where A&M doesn't move Michael McDonald over to the Doobie Brothers, but he stays and starts singing some lead w/ Steely Dan ... it should produce warm and fuzzy feelings without the need for drink.)



(editorial #2 ... for fun, transpose the demo shuffle from the end and blend it together with your mind's ear's version of Moondance ... pretend Boz Scaggs is doing a cover of it, and that might help ... like the inverse almost of 'All Blues').

Saw them a couple of years back and Leland Sklar was playing bass. Mike came out for a curtain call and did not look good.
