I don't think that's exactly right. I believe Tom Ricketts appreciated the ballpark and understood its value in the long term. However, when Big Daddy Joe began thundering about empty seats and demanding to know what his idiot kid spent family money on, Little Tommy began to shiver and make the professional Jon Taffer type corporate moves regarding the team and the ballpark instead of sticking with his instincts and telling his old man that he knew what the fuck he was doing and to shut the fuck up. That's why Joe is a power player and Tom is not. Not uncommon with scions of wealthy families. I know a ton of North Shore guys just like that.

While I will agree with part of what JORR is talking about, I give Tommy some credit for overcoming some shortfalls that others saw in him....he put the organization on a great track going forward.

Dont think he will ever be a power player, because he doesnt want to. Guys who are power players get off on it, its why they do it...or at least it is part of the reason...

Tommy was selected as the buyer of the Cubs first and foremost due to the wealth of the family. He became the choice as the guy who would cause the least problems, thus Cuban out of the running and a few others, who are too showy for the Franchise Comittee (AKA Jerry Reinsdorf). Jerry selected Tommy from the crowd in the hopes he would screw it up and continue to Cubs tradition of sucking from the utter of the cash cow.

Things have changed and Jerry came to play ball this year.

Sox fans should be thanking Tommy Ricketts for building the foundation of something that everyone knows is coming as a fiananical force in the league and Jerry knew he needed to compete at some level, thus you got this years spending spree like never before. You are welcome.

You live in a way too cubbycentric world.

The Sox couldn't be bad forever. Them trying to win this year has nothing to do with the Cubs and more having to do with wasting the prime years of Sale and Abreu. Heck, the Sox tried to win the past two years while the Cubs were horrible. They just have a better chance of it this year.

Let's assume the Cubs weren't a great team this year.

What do you think the Sox are doing? Let Abreu and Sale play another year with a team winning 72 games? I understand your dislike of Jerry but the one thing he has shown is a willingness to go for it when he feels they have enough to build around.

Not to mention that under Kenny (mainly post 2005), they tried going for it and failed more often. So they are trying a different path. bigfan clearly just can't understand how Theo had to tank three straight years while the Sox are division contenders and have turned things around in 18 months.

Ricketts has yet to have a winning team under his ownership so it looks like Reinsdorf was correct again.

Wrong, spany. Ricketts reached an agreement with the Tribune Co in the middle of the 2009 season. The White Sox had winning records in 2010 and 2012. The last time the Cubs had a winning record, was with 83 wins in 2009. The final year under Tribune ownership.

So what have they won since 2009?
WS?
Pennant?
Wait - probably just a division. Or at least a WC spot.

Please remember the 6 Bryant threads when considering what the Sox have won since 2009.

A winning team is one that wins more than it loses for a season.

Just like a losing team is one that loses more than it wins for a season.

GREAT! Now that I understand the extremely low threshold that is considered "winning" I feel even better about the Cubs future going forward!

This is probably gonna the winningest team of all time in this city!

The concept of a winning team is pretty much black and white. I'd like to hear your definition if you don't believe mine is accurate.

You're right like usual, BRick. I know this because you told me.

I just can't believe all of the hand wringing by all of the Sox fans around here about whether or not the Cubs can win 82 games per season over the next 10 years. WINNING!

I think the Cubs are a winning team next year.

The short answer is normally the opposite of what you actually think.

Buy the way, Tom has all ready doubled his investment. Cubs are worth 2 billion easily. Probably more if theClippers sold for 2 billion. Tom paid about 900 million.

the clippers arent worth $2B... but someone with a lot of money and desire to own an NBA team paid $2B to acquire them. If some super cub fan didnt overpay to buy them previously when they were for sale (unless you consider what ricketts paid to be an overpay) I cant see them going for what the clippers did if they were on the market today

Yes. Because the cynical negative White Sox fan thing is a lie. It's the equivalent of "Best Fans in Baseball" for the Cardinals where it's repeated ad nauseum so it must be true.

Are you trying to control my emotions?

Not at all. It's just calling out horseshit where I see it.

Hahn has been universally praised across baseball and Chicago. Sox fans are excited to have him as the GM and the upcoming season. Why? What has he done? His track record says he's produced two season of utter garbage.

And yet there is crowing that the Sox are contenders. Hissyfits that the Sox should be the team to watch in Chicago.

Yet, if I was to take a stereotypical "White Sox" look I would say:

How is adding a 35-year old 1B, 30-year-old known PED user, a losing pitcher, lefty with only 1 year of relieving and a closer guaranteeing to turn a 72 win team into a contender?

The team needed their ace to pitch a 3rd place Cy Young season and the "rookie" DH to have a 4th place MVP season just to get to 72 wins.

Right now, the ace has a broken foot and the DH has turned into a slap hitter.

And of course, the manager is still Robin Ventura.

I don't hear that. I don't read that. Because it doesn't exist. The cynical negative White Sox fan is a bullshit lie. It's a made up stereotype meant to be a subtle swipe at Cubs fans.
