I haven't had an overnight radio geekout since Ryan Arnold played all of "Echoes."

Well, I'd argue punk rock was not quite as mainstream back then. However, I'm smart enough to know that I'm just asking for trouble making any statements like that.

You're right, but that's the whole point. The reason some shit is more popular is because it appeals to a larger group. You don't get rich targeting Generation X.

Yet...

Those guys will one day yearn for the music of their prime years just like I will one day and I'll be like "Oh cool, this station plays Basket Case, Jesus Of Suburbia and When I Come Around!".

Though, Pandora may end that whole thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't even like to guess what the media might be like when that time comes. But that kind of touches on what RPB and I were discussing this morning regarding genre. Broadcasting is being replaced by narrowcasting.

Ultimately, though the whole thing is driven by advertising. People got sick and had medical conditions when I was ten years old. There were drugs to address those issues. What there wasn't was constant commercials about said drugs. That's because the group of people requiring them wasn't nearly as large.

It is crazy. essentially the same playlists for 30 years. meanwhile anything prior to 1965 was outlawed.

Wasn't "Classic Rock" basically invented to get all the guys who weren't interested in things like disco, punk, and eventually alternative and rap? You could have been 25 years old in 1985 and basically become a Classic Rock guy because you hated the other options that were out there. You'd still be in the prime radio listening years.

Isn't Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins already starting to creep in as "Classic Rock"?

I think we have to differentiate between "classic rock" and classic rock as a radio format. Yes, I think some Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins may be making in roads into classic rock radio although I wouldn't really call either one "classic rock". Smashing Pumpkins does share a lot of traits with Boston and Kansas though.

Solution......Play more Jerry Doucette, Donnie Iris, Mason Profitt and Strawberry Alarm Clock, by these additions,
with less of the other stuff, maybe have Mac do a "Critics at Xtra Large" segment on Tuesday mornings at say, 6:45am?
Problem solved, everyone will be happy......except maybe the Crease Monkey's, who shouldn't be on radio for a while.

RE: Boilermaker Rick's comment about not wanting to watch Drew Brees play cricket. I'm not playing a "different game," Boiler... I'm playing a different "position" in a different "offense." Enjoying being the "two guard" role more than I expected. Pete's a smooth driver and handles the ins and outs, etc. in an easy-to-listen-to manner. The "offense" is classic rock and guy talk (including sports). Not exactly uncharted water for me.

RE: Ed from Lisle, point noted and already addressed. We're on the organic

You guys regularly note that sports radio types are so very thin-skinned -- and you're RIGHT -- so don't be so think-skinned yourselves when your observations are challenged.

How long should one listen before deciding whether they want to dedicate more time to listening in your opinion.
I want to listen to sports talk, and that's when I pop on the Score.
When I want to listen to music, I pop on Pandora or Spotify and listen to my exact favorites. No commercials.

This is not meant as a shot at you dude, not at all, cause I do really like your sports thoughts, but in my opinion, you might be a bit long in the tooth for pop culture/guy talk... I mean, Springsteen and Elton? Dude. I... don't know but not exactly... contemporary.

For the record, Mac, I am happy for you to be doing what you love.
I'm doing what I love too, and as I was unhappy as fuck as a VoIP System Designer I've found a love for the machines that keep us warm in a way I couldn't really explain to anyone, especially my stupid aunts and uncles who constantly tell me how any idiot can do this work (they can't) and I am wasting my potential (I probably am) and that I should have been a lawyer or a doctor (yeah, you want me cutting you open).

But... I'm guessing these guys aren't your audience any longer.

I understand that there is a feeling here that maybe, after listening to you arguably made you the man you are today (in reference to your point about having made millions in sports talk), they may feel some abandonment.

However, to thine owns self be true.

I find it a little odd that neither Frank or Mac mentioned the vacation they took together last year.

Really, what it comes down to for me is, when I tune into a station for sports talk I want to hear guys talk. When I tune into a station for music I want guys to shut the fuck up and play music.

That's because there is no popular music anymore. My generation was probably the last one to have common musical experiences because we had to because there was nothing else to do/listen to.

Just a couple thoughts before you go back to trashing it or getting on to the next interview with Pernell McPhee's college roomate....

1. The show will sound much different in six months than it does today. It will sound even more different a year from now. #softlaunch

2. I took this job for me... nobody else. I beg your pardon, but I don't care how many sports radio or talk radio listeners come aboard. The auditorium was full when Pete and I got here. #bestmusicevermade

3. Beardown has a truth-telling style. #gettingoutofbed

Carry on. Now here's Aerosmith.
Congrats to the laziest POS in Chicago radio. You're lazy ass finally got a job that you put in NO work but get a check.

Too bad you have to get up early, but other than that you have your dream job, no work, but hope for people to kiss your lazy ass. Too bad, but this board shows by the comments that you are a lay sellout with nothing to offer. Some of us have known that for years. Go back to drugs you stupid lazy drug addicted asshole.
BTW FUCK OFF and go get your lazy ass SHINEBOX.
