Possible but not from what I have read.

PittMike, I know how you feel about older lead singers and their voices, but I have to say this anyway. With Roth's voice as bad as it is, coupled with the high register he insists on using, why the hell would they release a live double album with DLR on lead vocals?

From the snippets I've heard on VHND.com, DLR sounds like shit. And I say this as a HUGE fan of his. It pisses me off and saddens me because he was MY GUY!

At least with a studio release, his vocals can be doctored. Hell, even on a "live" album, they can be, but from what I've heard, sadly, they haven't been.

It's the ultimate hubris, and I would rather they released a new studio album or a previous live recording from the band's heydays.

I haven't heard it yet but have had others tell me DLR bad on the record. When I saw him he seemed to use a lot of the speaking rather than singing too high technique.

Ed did get re-married, but I don't believe for a second he's been consistently sober. Not a chance.

VHND. COM has some clips from the new live album. Just listened to Hot for Teacher. While I think Al's drums aren't quite in sync with Wolf and Ed (or maybe they're not in sync with Al but whatever), it's by far the best song in terms of Dave's vocals.

I hope so badly that they don't suck on their TV appearances on Kimmel and Ellen and that Dave isn't a complete moron. I don't have a good feeling.

I actually like Van Hagar a little more than VH.
Saw them at Marcus Ampitheatre like 25 years ago, or whenever F.U.C.K. came out.
Alice in Chains was still supporting Facelift.
AiC sucked then, and still suck now.
Alice In Chains is one of the most overrated bands of all time.
Can't stand all but 2 or 3 songs.
Hagar now is like a rock music Guy Fieri. Kind of a likeable parody.
I like the DLR stuff just fine, I just kinda liked the 'songs' better with Hagar.
I have no opinion on the Extreme guy's tenure, as I don't believe I've ever heard a single track from that album.
Anyway, this tour will likely derail, as is per norm with EVH and DLR.
Pass.

What's hilarious is that I had not said a word, but he made the thread all about me, including his visions of hitting in me in the head with a bat.

Completely normal. Definitely not drunk.

I would argue that the introduction of keyboards to Van Halen's sound, starting on 1984, was more detrimental than the hiring of Sammy Hagar. The best songs from either era have no keyboards, the worst always do.

One could argue that the "new normal" is that DLR and VH coexist just fine these days. How long has the reunion tours been going on? Too much money and too many years gone by to be derailing anything anymore.

I like a few Van Hagar tunes, but overall just too much polish, too much sheen. Give me the raw energy of the original lineup.

And fuck Valerie Bertinelli (obviously). I read her indignant comments on MA not being in the band and how touring wouldn't be happening w/out Wolfie out on the road as Eddie's psuedo life coach.

That's not very rock and roll.

Dirt is one of the best albums of the '90's. Their other material can be hit or miss for me. I would also rate their MTV unplugged performance as 2nd best all time behind Nirvana's.

I find the Nirvana Unplugged highly overrated. My favorite "Unplugged," and I only saw it once, was The Cure. They were playing toy instruments and shit, really took the concept to heart.

Nirvana was not the best unplugged of all time. That is plain wrong thinking.

Nirvana's Unplugged was popular and redefined the unplugged thing so it was a moment but not the greatest.

So much to say...

Dave fucked up his nose somehow and was wearing a bandaid across the bridge. Wonder if he got clipped twirling the mic stand.

Ed looked cool. Really cool actually. Glad he's healthy, as far as his public persona shows.

Wolf is a big boy, but God bless. Decent player and the reason they're all onstage together.

Al is Big Al. As unique a sound as his brother. Love him.

As for the peformance, they played 3 songs: Panama, Runnin with the Devil, and Dance the Night Away. As soon as I heard Eddie noodling before the first song, the hair on my neck, arms, and legs stood up and I was 15 again. There isn't a drug around that gives me that euphoric high as good as EVH.

Panama was good from a band perspective. Dave was OK.

Runnin with the Devil was their best. Dave got a good banshee scream or 2 out. That was cool.

Dave was horrible on DTNA, and the end was cut off because they ran long.

All in all, the actual musicians were great. Dave was average to below average.

I equate my love of this band like my love, or former love, of the Cubs. I'm not 15 anymore. I'm not that kid with the wide eyed optimism to blindly follow these 2 maddening entities. Sadly, I don't think DLR will ever be able to live up to the rock god image I had of him. I know whats been said in this thread about how it's not fair to compare him to his younger days, but the rest of the band sounds good. Maybe he needs to cut down on his clownish behavior and focus on actually singing well. There's no rock god jump off the drum riser to make me forget the silliness.

Oh well. There will always be memories and bootleg videos. And yes, I know I'm a dork for caring so much about a dumb band. But music is awesome, and Van Halen will always mean something to me.

Thank you and God bless.

Most of us have bands like that for us. I love VH, but too much drama and nonsense has cured me of interest.
