I'm a Sox fan...I think there is some truth in BigFan's comment. Competition is always a good thing for the consumer. Jerry wants to win...we have seen that, but there is also a financial bottom line. We've seen that too.

while I'm sure Jerry is thrilled with his 2005 championship and the money he has made, he is a baseball fan. He is an owner...and yes, I'm sure it still eats at him that his team is and always will be the ugly step-child.

I don't believe a successful Cubs team directly impacts Jerry's day-to-day decisions, but I do believe it grays and erodes the line between "trying to win" and "financial bottom line".

The Sox have found a way to be remarkably profitable though. They've made money all but last year since 2005.

I think what we are seeing here is one last run at winning a World Series/increasing the value of the team before they sell it off to a billionaire who knows he could double his money by buying an undervalued asset.

Correct. And making a spending spree run before selling is a poor reason. Any prospective owner realizes what the attendance will be and they realize that they probably never see the lease dealJerry got.

While I am sure Jerry would be willing to listen to offers he isn't looking to sell in his lifetime. " Why would I, what else am I going to do?" His words...not my thought.

The Cubs did it right before they went up for sale. The Sox were very profitable for the last 10 years. That changed this past year. That is no good if you are trying to sell.

His kids don't want it though.

He'll still have the Bulls which print money.

Just wait until Wrigley Soleil is completed. Your heads will spin and the money will flow in.

Is it advantageous for Jerry to sell Sox/Bulls shortly before he dies rather than after? Or does the partnerships and/or other planning help his kids there?

Did he say that he wants to be good because the Cubs are going to be good?

If we really believe his words, then the reason they are spending is because he believes they can win a World Series.

Skybox on Sheffield owner Marc Hamid indicted in $600,000 scheme to defraud the Cubs, state, city & county, US attorney's office announces.

Any inside info on this guy bigfan?

Hamid submitted false royalty statements to the Cubs based on underreported attendance stats between 2008 through 2011, indictment alleges.

He underreported rooftop gross revenues by more than $1.5 million, depriving Cubs of "hundreds of thousands" in royalty payments, feds say.
