I didn't particularly like this either stylistically or for its content.

I never read the book. I assume it is written in an almost clinical manner to describe the political situation that lead to Jesus' execution from all perspectives. I don't think the show worked very well on that level. There was very little indication of the political pressures on Pilate or Caiphas. Everything in this story seemed too convenient. It was striking that Jesus really had no idea who he was until John the Baptist noticed him.

I also assume that the book chose to not address the divinity of Jesus to ensure that it did not dominate the discussion. However, if Jesus is not divine, what is the point of writing about him. It seemed to me that the show concluded that not only was he not divine but that he did not think himself divine, even up to death. He was just another rebel.

i'd heard about this but it just seemed smarmy...especially coming from bill o'reilly. so this is a non-religious take then? just the political angle?

Haven't watched it but did see Bill say it is purposely not to be religious more of a quasi historical look at the man I guess.

Regardless of your view of Jesus it was a political assassination. That is the most accurate portrayal.

like I said, it didn't seem very accurate even in that regard. Everything seemed too convenient even for a fictional account let alone something that was semi historical.

i read a review in which they said the word "christian" is used to describe one of the followers, which is anachronistic because christianity didn't really start til centuries after jesus' death. all of his disciples where jewish.

Foreshadowing maybe?

the criticism came from the fact that it was supposed to be historically accurate so it's an anachronism. like if a movie was set in the 1920's but people are wearing acid washed jeans and carrying cell phones.

Christ is just a Greek translation of Hebrew for messiah. They certainly would have recognized themselves as both jewish and followers of the messiah. They were starting to be called Christians by others soon after Christ's ascension.

wasn't the origin of the term "christian" derogatory? somewhere in Acts, wasn't it an insult, like mocking?

I don't remember. It could be in the same way people would mock truthers or other sub groups who believe something that is not quite mainstream
