take a listen to Rozner doing mornings this week...all of the condescension and management supporting but with about 1% of the talent...and that is the BEST you will get as a replacement.

Hey Barry, the Mc Cown thing isn't played out at all two years after the fact and after two other teams have made him their starting QB. Keep up the good work.

All the Cubs trolls should read Rozner's DH article today mainly regarding Bryant. He called you out as idiots. It's one of the few areas where I agree in total with the Roz.

I'm not reading the Daily Herald even on a dare.

I have never said I don't understand sending Bryant down. I have said the public reasoning by management is insultingly transparent. I have also mentioned that, given the very public revenue projections for 2019, the money argument is far less valid. Couple that with the most likely scenario that year 7 is going to be bought out before free agency.

The fact is, if you are on board with sending him down for financial reasons, then you must also support keeping him there until June 1.

Rozner is another one of these guys with few accomplishments and a weak academic pedigree who feels very confident in his intellectual superiority.

Agreed GD. I don't mind Rozner on the radio, outside of the MCCOWN stuff, but calling him a poor mans Bernstein in terms of radio talent would be generous

His argument is simple, 7 is greater than 6. Read it!

I'd post it, but I am on my ipad, and it's a pain.

I've argued many times before that Dan is an important component of the station but not as its lead. He is the guy who is supposed to be contradictory to everyone else. He was great when North was on top and he was playing Ain't That A Kick In The Head.

His argument should be that 6.8 is greater than 6. He even says that they could be less than a year away from competing so that would essentially be...now.

Bryant should be on the team day 1.

Here you go. Got my day started off right being called a dolt.

Quote:
Rozner: Bryant decision beyond grasp of dolts

As expected by most but still criticized by many, power prospect Kris Bryant's major-league debut was put on temporary hold Monday.

When he broke up with the Red Sox, Theo Epstein thought he'd be starting a love affair with another large and sophisticated American city.

It didn't take him long to find out he'd been dropped smack dab in the middle of a cornfield, surrounded by cows, bumpkins and the eternally vapid.

At his initial news conference, he endured questions about his snappy appearance and whether his mother would have preferred he become a doctor or lawyer.

Only minutes later, he was outside being photographed beneath the world-famous Wrigley Field marquee … while being serenaded by Ronnie Woo Woo.

Why he didn't run for his life at that moment is probably the most interesting question of the day.

What isn't in question is why the Cubs returned Kris Bryant to minor-league camp Monday.

It is surprising only to those who recently tumbled from a turnip truck, and has been expected since Bryant went on an extraordinary minor-league tear in 2014.

It is understandable that Cubs fans are disappointed they won't see Bryant sooner.

It is understandable when agent Scott Boras advocates for his client.

It is understandable that the players association feigns shock and outrage.

And it is entirely understandable to all of the above that this was completely necessary and absolutely within CBA rules.

What is inexplicable remains the inability of some portion of the fan base and media to understand the very simple concept that having a player for seven years is better than having a player for six years.

Yes, seven is indeed better than six. Sounds pretty straight forward and yet remains elusive for some.

To suggest six is better than seven is merely abject stupidity, embarrassing contrarianism or the simplest form of public pandering from the simplest of folks.

Then again, Epstein has seen this nearly from the moment he got here.

He was criticized for rebuilding a broken organization, which is now rebuilt and probably a year -- or less -- away from competing.

He was laughed at for selecting monster hitters when big-name pitchers were available at the top of the draft, and now one of those hitters is the fawning object of such affection that apoplexy is the theme of the day.

He was ripped for not spending money, which he instead saved for the likes of Jon Lester, Joe Maddon and a farm system that is now the best in baseball.

He was blasted for trading Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel last summer, when he supposedly didn't get enough in return.

Now he is praised for acquiring Addison Russell and Billy McKinney and re-signing Hammel.

He is praised bringing in Lester and Maddon.

He is praised for drafting Bryant and Kyle Schwarber.

He is praised for his transparency while rebuilding a team, rather than having spent untold millions to lose hundreds of games.

Epstein must be able to see now why so many before him have tried and failed to win on the North Side, nearly always dumping the rebuild in favor of quick fixes that fix nothing and set the franchise back several years and hundreds of millions.

It is long past laughable now that some can't fathom the Bryant decision. It is inexplicable, indescribable and indefensible, unless your name is Scott Boras, and he is only doing what any good agent would.

Anyone else making that case only serves to humiliate themselves for reasons that absolutely defy logic.

Epstein must flee his office in horror some days at the sheer dimwittedness of it all.

And wonder why he didn't run for the hills when he had his chance.

Remember, Barry Rozner is not a fan of Cubs and hasn't been since he was a beat writer...or the Blackhawks

I'm just a Midwestern rube, but even I know that if Theo is gonna duet with Ronnie Woo Woo he should probably put on his gorilla suit first.

They're a contender except when one is arguing in favor of keeping their best player in the minors for 1/6 of the season.

This is the one that pisses me off. That's not the counterargument. Everyone understands that 6.8 is better than 6.

The argument is that the definite now is better than the distant indefinite future. If it was a matter of this year vs. next year, maybe a decision like this could make sense. This is a decision not to compete in 2015 because we want to be sure we are able to save money in 2021 - with no guarantee of whether that team will be in a better position to compete than this year's team. And, even with all that, you still could have the guy in 2021 if you sign him to a contract anyway.

All this takes place in the context of a team that has intentionally tried not to compete for 3 years. It's infuriating.

Yes, I know, every team does it. But, when is some reporter going to write the article that the Cubs already did it...to Bryant? He should have been up here last July but they kept him down so as not to waste a year. Might as well wait until next year so they get him at a bargain in 2022.

I'm glad you're saying it as a Cub fan. Darkside isn't going to roast you the way he roasted me for saying the same goddamn thing.

I don't understand the Bryant thing either. I would bring him up now.

If he is "the goods", the Cubs are going to pay him anyway. I would rather be giving him a fat contract when he is younger, rather than tacking on that extra year when he is old and bad. And if he sucks, you can push his ass out the door sooner.

I wonder if the CBA would allow them to just chain the guy to the dugout and feed him buckets of gruel then only unchain him to bat and play the field?

Then they could probably control him to old age.

Well, I'm certainly inclined to side with the worker over the employer in any given situation, and while technically that's what this is, it's probably hard to work up sympathy among the masses for a 22 year old kid who already has a $7 million bonus in his pocket. Besides that, the Players Union has kicked the shit out of the owners with regularity over the last forty years.

The one who is really getting hosed here is the fan that wants to see the best players on his team actually play.

Rozner has told you there is no alternative. Believe it or you're a dolt. Rozner says so.

This message brought to you by a daily reader of the Daily Herald even while on vacation.

one guy on baseballthinkfactory commented in the "bryant sent down" thread that he's personally pissed cuz i guess the cubs are doing their roadtrip to colorado in those first ~12 days of the season and now he's not going to be able to see babe bryant so WTF?!?! FIX THE CBA!

i think he was likely being very sarcastic, but still he has a point there. the media is (rightfully) hyping the shit out of the babe and now you have the potential for cities like denver to get shafted out of seeing greatness all because a bunch of millionaires are haggling over 5-20 million dollars that the guy is 90% likely to get anyways. #FirstWorldProblems

That's what I don't understand about this. It's not like he would be getting paid $2m in 2021 when he could be getting $30m, is it? How much are the Cubs actually going to be saving (assuming he fulfills expectations on the field)? Plus, let's say the Cubs win a WS or two in the next 6 years. Would I, as a lifelong Cubs fan who has now seen a WS victory, really give a fuck as to whether they re-sign the guy? Ricketts and Epstein would have so much goodwill saved up they wouldn't care about paying Kris Bryant. Just look at how much outrage there was in St. Louis when they said goodbye to Pujols (none).

It is the amount of years they can pay substantially less than that up until that mega deal.

Buster ranks the Cubs 19th to start the season. They'll be ranked in the top five by next year.
